Can anyone recommend a good welder in S. Wis.?

I have a 1984 Scamp 5th wheel. Not having any trouble with the axle, but I'm sure it (like me) isn't getting any younger. So I'm thinking of replacing the axle, while also adding a lift to get clearance for a bigger truck. Trucks seem to get taller with each passing year.

I know Scamp sells the replacement axle at a reasonable price, and if necessary I could drive up to the factory to have it installed. But it would obviously be easier to have the axle shipped here than haul the trailer there. So first I thought I'd ask if anyone on this forum has dealt with a good, reliable welder in my area (southern Wisconsin) that they would recommend.

Anyone have an axle or trailer frame welded and want to recommend the guy who did the work for you?

Not sure how "southern" you are in WI, but if you run out of options and want to come to Iowa City, I can refer you! Tho honestly, plenty of good welders with connections thru Redneck Trailers or somebody else, would probably be in your community - and cheaper than driving to Backus or Ia City.

If I have to drive any distance, I guess I might as well drive to Backus. Seems like it would be best to have the work done by the builders, and besides it might be nice to see the factory.

The aftermarket service at Backus is prompt, courteous, competent and competitively priced. Plus there is plenty of nice camping in the area.
Call ahead and you can likely get your axle replaced in the time it takes to have a leisurely breakfast or lunch.
There is a nice family restaurant just almost across the street from the factory.

I bought the Dexter axle for my Scamp from a local supplier and had a journeyman welder (friend) do the work. At 45 degree down, my Scamp now has 15" tires and tows like a dream. I wouldn't bother with the Scamp factory unless you want to visit the factory. YMMV

My problem is I don't have a friend I can ask, and I don't know any good, reliable welders.

I guess I'd rather trust the guys at the factory than take a chance on phonebook roulette.

Mark, Double D Services (608-845-3800) changed the axle on our Bigfoot and are well reguarded locally. They fabricate trailers and do repairs on trailers of all types. Worth a call they are near Verona WI.
