Just insured my new Escape this week. My home and auto insurance are from the same provider, so when I spoke with them, they indicated that:
- the trailer insurance would be added to my home policy and would cover damage and full replacement of the trailer and its components (about $240/yr with $500 deductible), and
- liability coverage for when the trailer is being towed would be added to my auto policy (for about $30/yr).
With 4 drivers and 3 auto's in our household, plus a travel trailer and home insurance, we are a substantial source of income for my insurance company. What is interesting is that they never even asked which of my vehicles would be used for towing the trailer, but were very happy to add the additional coverage to my policy.

Is that McAfee Insurance Tony? I used to use them and they were good. Can't remember why I left them now.

towing with classic insurance
Hi Don, I got insurance through Echelon. $176.00 per year and covers my car for appraised value of $9500.00 and $4000.00 on the camper. I will post the rest of the information when I get all the policy paperwork. Camping season is near folks, even though I still have 18 inches of snow on my front lawn!

Shop around for insurance, I looked into "custom" insurance for my car Volvord but was not impressed with the limited coverage. I spoke to my regular insurance company and they had the car insured for replacement value of a stock vehicle (about $4,000). I had the car appraised which came in at $35,000, the insurance company accepted the appraisal and is covering the car for that full appraised value with no restrictions. The part that made me very happy is there was NO increase in my premiums!!!

Thanks, yes it is a "fun" tow vehicle. The challenge is remembering to slow down for corners

insuring classic car to tow
Hey I like that Volvord. how bout instead of chains I put a 4x4 chassis under the T-bird. May need that to get the camper out of the back yard in time for camping season. Might get up to 15 centimeters snow here on Friday.

insurance for towing with classic vehicle
Hello everyone, been a week or so since I last updated on trying to get insurance for my T-bird to tow the Trillium. I now have coverage through Echelon for both the car and camper. Agreed value of $9500.00 with 19A endorsement on the car and the Trilly is valued at $4800.00 When using the T-bird to tow the camper it must only be for overnight events such as car shows and fiberglass RV gatherings. I can use my daily driver for regular camping excursions and that works for me . $190.00 per year for both. I used Hutcheson, Reynolds & Caswell brokers in Bracebridge. This has been a real challenge finding proper coverage and more than once I would get different answers from people at the same insurance companys. When it comes to classic vehicle insurance most all the brokers or insurance companys go through haggerty or Lant and I'm not sure if they are not one and the same. Come on camping season I'm ready to roll

Talked to Sue today and because my pickup truck and trailer are not the same year, she can not give me coverage so I will still be looking for an agent.
Thanks Tony.

Sorry to hear that Don. I still don't understand why it is such an issue! Do you think there are many people out there unknowingly without proper coverage? You would think we were crazy high risk rebels towing our little fiberglass campers with old vehicles.

I would think there is quite a few without the proper coverage. My buddy tows with his 1956 Chev but it is on a regular car policy as opposed to a Classic policy. I might end up with that as well by the time you take the driving coverage off for 6 months you are only in the $500 - $600 range for a full year.

I don't get it, either. One can purchase replacement value insurance on just about anything.
I wonder if part of the problem here is that folks are going around looking for "Classic Car Insurance" as if that's a sort of special class. It sure sounds like that's the case with the restrictions agreed to by an earlier poster...

When I bought my pickup a year ago I was actually looking for regular auto insurance, but most companies won't cover older vehicles. If they do offer coverage, they will use NADA values which are pretty much garbage for a restoration vehicle. Anyway, I went with American Collectors and they gave me a very good price. However, I just spoke with them on the phone and they won't cover anything if towing is involved.
Anyone have recommendations on who to call? I'm purchasing a new trailer so I'm in the same boat as Don...otherwise I would give Sue a call.
