Casita Towing

I am getting ready to buy a 2007 Casita 16' Spirit Delux. Does anyone know what the ideal height of the hitch off the ground.

Every vehicle may have a different height because of tires...spring drop etc. but this should get you fairly close as i have a 1994 16 foot casita SD towed with a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the measurement from the ground to the top of the two inch ball on the tow vehicle while unhooked from the trailer is 20-1/2"........ my tongue weight is about 260 lbs.

Hitch weight for my Casita 17' SD is 470 pounds.

My Escalade has automatic load leveling so hitch weight is compensated for.

The top of the ball when hitched is 22 1/2 inches.

A call to Casita might be helpful to find out the hitch height when the trailer is level. You want the trailer as level as possible when towing.

When hitched to the TV, the front will drop a bit as the TV springs settle to the weight. That can be corrected with a Weight distributing hitch, but some TV manufacturers don't recommend that type of hitch.

So you may have to compensate with the tow bar/ball height.

My understanding is that if "Level" is hard to achieve, it is better to have the front of the trailer slightly lower than the back to help prevent trailer sway. But that could be wrong!
