Crazy Scamp 5th Wheel Hitch

I have a question about the hitch. This may be a stupid question, but here goes. On our compact jr after hitching up we push down this lever thingy and then put in a pin to keep it from uncoupling. With a scamp fifth wheel do you still have to do that? If you do, do you have to climb in the bed of the truck to do it?

It's up to you if you pin it or not, but yes, you have to get in the bed to latch it.

Edit: If you don't already know this, a scamp fifth wheel...well, isn't a fifth wheel. It's also not a gooseneck. It uses a bumper pull style hitch at a fifth wheel height.

Basically, it's the same as hooking up your current trailer, but in the bed.

Yes, except that the actual hitch on the trailer is made just like a bumper pull trailer hitch. So the locking mechanism and pin is identical. I am 6'4" and I have a hard time reaching the hitch from the side of the truck, but then my truck is a F250. A Tacoma would be easier I suspect and lower.

I would never, ever leave a trailer hitch unpinned when towing ! $2 worth of pin or wrecked truck, trailer and potentially a homicide + civil lawsuit if the trailer gets away and kills / maims someone...

Do you both like your campers and would you buy them again? Thinking about getting a new one in the spring.

I've been studying photos of the hitch and thought it looked the same as a regular bumper pull. Thanks.

I wouldn't either, but it's their choice.

I love it. I bought an old one because I wanted it outfitted different than factory, but they're great campers, IMHO.

We always climbed into the truck bed to complete the hitching process.

My metal truck tailgate has been removed and replaced with a mess-tailgate. When I hookup I can reach the hitch mechanism and pin lock by leaning in from the rear of the truck bed, it saves me from having to climb up and over the truck wheel well.
