Trailer: 1984 U-Haul 13 ft

Hi. I have a 13 foot Uhaul CT & I am wondering if there is anyone on the forum that tows their Uhaul with a 2006 Jeep Liberty. The Jeep has the spare tire mounted on the back. I would like to know kind of setup us used for towing (extra long ballmount or hitch extender). Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Patty,

We've towed our 16' Uhaul with a Jeep Liberty for a year now and yes, due to the spare tire mount, the trailer place where we had the hitch put on sold us the longer ball mount. The couple who owned the trailer before us also had a Liberty (Renegade) but they changed their spare tire design to angle somehow and used a regular hitch.

I honestly never felt real comfortable with the extension, to me it didn't feel like there was enough metal in the reciever for the weight of the tongue but your 13 is lighter thus less tongue weight and should be fine.

I had more tubing welded onto my drawbar and a new hole drilled to give me that extra inch needed to get past the tire.

The extension is 3 inches, which leaves plenty of material in the hitch to be stable. The new hole is 1 inch back from the original, and still in the original drawbar.

The charge was minmal.. I forget, but I want to say it was under 20 bones.

Gina,
Is that on the ball mount you are using now for the Weight Distribution Hitch?
You gave me your old drawbar from when you towed the 13' with the Jeep, which was longer than a standard one.

Patty,
I have not used it; still in the bin in the back of the van. If you can't find one locally, I could ship it to you.

Frederick,

Thanks for the offer. I have decided to raise the spare tire, so I won't need the drawbar. Thanks again.

Patty
