ECT on Tacoma

We have a new to us 2017 Toyota Tacoma with towing package. Anxious to get it out and give it a try with our 16 ft Deluxe Scamp.

The Toyota manul recommends activating the ECT when towing. It appears this mode has the transmission shift at a slightly higher point to make it easier on the truck when towing or climbing hills. What little I can find about it on line it appears it may lower gas milage.

Any recommendations on using or not using this feature when towing?

Also the truck has the S shift capability. As i understand it, this feature will limit the gear to go no higher than it is set at thus increasing engine braking. Sounds like a great feature for coming into Cherokee, N.C. from Maggie Valley. I could smell the brakes last year with our Ford Escape. any experience with this feature would also be appreciated.

I found that using it with my 2016 Off Road (3.5 engine) when towing my Escape 17B (3100 pounds) generally decreased fuel mileage, and didn't make much difference in towing performance.

I have a 2015 V6 Tocoma with towing package and just use the regular D when pulling my 15' Parkliner and have no trouble. If a steep downhill at times will use the standard and shift down to 3 to save some braking. I have never used the ECT

We always use the ECT when towing. It gives a little boost in power. Without it, the Tacoma feels a bit doggy. Haven't checked the gas mileage with and without it, though.

Doing that will also save a lot of wear and tear on your torque converter clutch and additional heat in the fluid. It's there for a reason, use it.
