I'm not saying that anyone should do something unsafe or anything that is beyind their comfort zone... but most of these trailers are very light weight
. This is the kind of conversation that people towing 5,000+ pound trailers ought to be having. Some FGRVs are a little on the heavy side, but my Scamp
13 is about 1,200 pounds (closer to 1,400 pounds loaded) and is easily pulled by almost any 4 cylinder car. If a vehicle is damaged by towing a 1,400 pound trailer, then it is simply not a very well designed vehicle. I believe the Astro van uses a TurboHydromatic 350 tranny, or one of its close relatives. It shouldn't even notice a 1,400 pound trailer behind it. I've got a 7 passenger Chevy van, and I certainly wouldn't think twice about hauling 6 of my 200 pound buddies and myself (1,400 pounds). Come to think of it, I don't even think about hauling my 6,000 pound boat... even though the van has well over 200,000 miles on it.
Hauling the Scamp
with that van would be overkill. That's why I haul it with my Scion xD with a 1.8 liter 128 horsepower engine. Front wheel drive... they only sell the AWD version overseas. They also sell it with a turbodiesel in Europe...
