Need to know what trailer you have. I don't recall which brands have which size, but many are 2". There are Odd balls out there so don't just go blindly unless you want a collection of extra balls.

If you are having a hitch installed you can always complete the job without a ball. Check the tongue of your trailer and see what size hitch you have - it should be stamped on the hitch where it goes on the ball. You can buy the ball when you know what size.

If the shop is amenable you could put on a 2" ball (most common size) and exchange it later if it needs to be switched.

The small eggs I've seen are either 2" or 1-7/8" balls. I have seen both, and they are not interchangeable unless you have a special ball, so I simply have two different inserts, one with each size ball on it. I don't think there's any way you can know for sure which to get now, although if you had to choose, I'd say 2" is more likely.

I agree with those who say to just wait. The other reason is that there are different angles of "drop" on the square part that the ball attaches to, for different heights of trailer/tow vehicle. Again, you won't know till you have the trailer. But, these parts are available at WalMart, so it's reasonable to buy them on site after you have found a trailer, unless you are really in the boonies.

You can get that later at Wally for good bit less. Equally important as the ball size, will be the amount of drop you'll need which will depend on the trailer. When you find your trailer you can ask the seller the ball size and then head to Wally and pick up the one you need. Probably won't be able to determine the correct drop (or rise) until your hitched up.
I bought an adjustable from U-haul for $45 that allows me to adjust the drop on the fly with a 3/8" ratchet which is the best way to go.

Had to do something right then so I pulled up the Casita website on the computer there and the nice trailer hitch man called them and talked it all over with them. Got a 2 inch. I'm sure, if I need to adjust later, the nice trailer hitch man (Danny - got to know him during the 2 hr wait) will work it out with me.
Ok, now I'm ready to go pick something up! Just need something to pick up....
