I thought there was only way to improve situations that caused major marital strife...

The driver hitches the trailer without help! Spouse (or SO) goes into the house or a walk and leaves the driver alone. So what if it takes 30 minutes to hookup? No arguments and only one person takes the blame for a dented license plate. What would you do if there was only one person to do the task... like the driver? I hitch all the time by myself and find it works better than with (unneeded and/or unwanted) help. It takes me more time with help and things typically go wrong!

YMMV

After seeing one in a thread here I made this one from an old aluminum chair leg, a piece of aluminum strap and a dollar store mirror. It fits on my crank at the front of the trailer and allows me to see the reciever through the rear mirror in the vehicle.
"Thank you dear, but please stand way over there where I won't back into you."

There was a thread back about 2007 but I can't find it through the useless [to me] search proceedure.

Here it is mounted. I wrapped the handle with hockey tape to make a better fit.

I have them. The work really well if you are on level ground. My drive has a slight slope, so I have "roll" issues, but I still use them. Keep watch for a Harbor Freight sale and you can get 'em for $10.

The tennis balls work very well. When the tennis ball next to the front of my 2" ball starts to tip towards the cab of my truck I know I need to pull forward about an inch and I'm perfectly lined up. Harbor Freight also carrys them

Here's another vote for the yellow tennis balls. I bought mine at Harbor Freight for under $10; they look like the ones WalMart sells for twice that price, but would still be worth it - they really work well!

Yellow tennis ball set up used here too. I even bought an extra set for a spare, as I did dent the stick on one already. I get so close using those tennis balls, and can do it by myself faster than with hubby waving his hands this way and that and shaking his head in disagreement with my driving. I don't see him out there offering to hitch it up himself! I am getting good at it, thanks to the magnetic tennis ball hookup.

hitch

Another vote for my Grand Caravan: I could open the back and look right at the ball. Hitched First time--every time.

Yellow tennis balls for me too! I can hitch up all by myself. I back up until I'm within a few feet, then put the balls in place, level them with each other, and back up until they 'kisss'.
One time, a very nice man insisted on helping me, despite my protests and showing him my yellow tennis ball kit. So just to make him feel helpful, I let him direct me in ...but I didn't like it.

I have a flat driveway and use a $50 trailer dolly from Harbor Freight to place my 16' Scamp exactly where I want in the drive. It is also useful for moving the trailer to the tow rig so you can either pick the tongue off the dolly and drop it on the hitch like I do. Or, if your back isn't feeling up to it then place it right behind the tow rig so a straight 2" back-up is all you need to get under the hitch after you have removed the dolly. Finally, I don't even bother attempting to back into the driveway anymore. I pull the truck only into the garage, move the tongue to the dolly and spin the trailer 180 degrees and move it to the side of the drive. It sure makes the end of the trip a lot more enjoyable.
