Honda crv vs ford escape

I would like feedback if you have one of these for towing a 13' standard scamp.

Thanks,
Emily

The towing capacity of a 2013 Honda CRV is 1500 pounds.
2013 Honda CR-V - Specifications - Official Honda Site

The towing capacity of the 2013 Ford Escape is 1500 to 3500 pounds depending on the model and options.

If you are considering an older towing vehicle you can do a search for "towing capacity" of the make and year.

The loaded weight of a Scamp 13 could be as much as 2000 pounds.
Trailer Weights in the Real World

In my opinion you need to get a towing vehicle with adequate towing capacity. You need to take into account cargo and passengers in the tow vehicle and not exceed the recommended hitch weight.

I have a 2008 Ford Escape with a 2.3L, 4CYL, 5SPD manual transmission.
It is well matched and comfortable towing my Scamp13 Deluxe frontbath. We commonly get 22-24MPG while towing at 58MPH. Sometimes as high as 26MPG. Maybe as low as 20MPG in extreme or windy conditions.
On a 5800 mile trip to Oregon (from Illannoy) we averaged 22.8MPG including the mountains , flats and all kinds of weather.
When not towing it can get 30MPG at 75MPH.
I have had no unscheduled maintenance on this car or it's like predecessor.(a 2006)
If you buy a 2009 or newer, the 4CYL is a 2.5L version of mine with twenty more HP.
The car is comfy and quiet especially with good tires.

As a reference I tow a Scamp 16 with a 2004 Honda CRV. We've been towing for 6 years and have made 2 loops of the USA.

Our Scamp weighs 2400 lbs imcluding a 1/2 full water tank and everything we need for 11 months on the road.

If you want more details on our Honda and how we tow send me a PM.

pageleigh: Is the 2010 listed in your profile the trailer you will be towing? What options does it have?

Good advice. Since you haven't purchased yet, it might make sense to get something with a 3500# rating that will allow you to move up later if you choose.

I think that it depends on the year.

I agree with Brian in post #3 - better all round towing experience to have some extra tow capacity than not enough. With the newer vehicles the mpg's achieved even while towing dont IMHO warrant the additional safety issues and wear and tear on a vehicle that takes place towing something with a tow vehicle thats tow capacity doesnt match the trailers weight.

No two trailers weigh the same. For example try as I might I cant match the lower weight of another member aboves trailer for example - even though I have the same model age of trailer and options etc. and I dont haul with water and pack light. Better to assume whatever trailer you have weighs at the top end of the Trailer Weights in the Real World list rather than the low end, if you have never actually weighed the axle and tongue weights when it is loaded up for camping.

Your correct tow cap of the 2nd Generation CR-V's and current 2013 models is only 1500 lbs - 1st generation CR-V's I believe were even less 1,000 lbs?

While every car has different needs I am using Michelin Hydroedge[215/75R17] on Enkei wheels. They are quiet, comfortable and perform well in all conditions. I now have 55,000 miles of a 90,000mile warranty. They are in great shape and hold pressure well.
look here...

Michelin HydroEdge tires - Reviews, ratings and specs in the Chicago Area - Discount Tire

There are two or three other tires which I would consider, but these are priced right and perform well on this car. I also put them on my DIL's Scion XB on which they are also doing well.
