There probably are diesels that could at least be close to 36 mph

Norm.... I believe you are right. A Jetta or Golf TDI could probably get that kind of mileage towing a small egg.

What speeds were you going at to accomplish 36+mpg?

My plan is to drive home. Fill up the Odyssey and compare calculated to displayed mpg to estimate the accuracy of the Odyssey's mpg readout.

At some point we'll take the Scamp out and determine the mpg. Our Scamp is basically always loaded, actually if there's electricity we never shut it off. I doubt long grades will be an issue with this engine but the nice part is they have long down grades. Coming back from Crater Lake we topped 30 mpg.

I'm having a hard time imagining what kind of mileage we'll get not knowing how ECO mode will function when towing.
With the CRV we got about 70% of Interstate mpg, 30 mpgs Highway, 22 towing. Of course we had a manual transmission and free wheeling was used on downhills when safe and possible.

Wayne, In part I wish we had bought a VW TDI to see how well one could tow a Scamp 16.

Wonderful First Trip

We drove down to visit RV friends near Cape Cod in our new Odyssey taking mostly I-495. The trip down the Honda reported mileage of 36.5 mpg. This trip was an early morning drive with normal traffic. The trip back was during rush hour and when we reached the gas station back in NH the Odyssey was showing 34.2 mpg for the trip to the Cape and back.

We filled up to check the accuracy of the Odyssey's mpg gauge, honestly expecting the Odyssey's gauge to be high.

The Odyssey took 5.1 gallons and we had driven 189 miles for an average of 36.47 mpg. This is an amazing number for a 4500 pound, 6 cylinder vehicle with an automatic transmission burning regular gas, not premium or diesel.

This equates to a 750 mile range with our 21 gallon tank. Obviously something we would never attempt but amazing.

Our next test will be towing and we are certainly curious how the Odyssey will tow our Scamp 16.

Those are very impressive numbers especially considering the smallish American gallons.

W,

Honestly the numbers are almost unbelievable. I would not have guessed that these numbers were remotely possible. The ECO mode, cylinder management, works great. After driving an extended period I can tell when it switches off because I can sync feel/listening to the ECO light however it is ever so slight.

Today I received a call from Honda America about the Odyssey, not carping I discussed the 7 pin connector situation. He said he will send me a followup form toprovide more detailed information. You have to love Honda.

Holy Cow Norm that is incredible!! Is this the first year Honda has offered this technology? I'm amazed I haven't heard of it before now. You'd think they'd be publishing those numbers all over the internet and in TV commercials.

I would have said "Holy Cow" as well but I know we can't make religious comments.

Seriously I did not expect the numbers we got. I did not do any thing special other than relax in the most comfortable seat since our motor home.

The Odyssey has had variable cylinder management on the high end Odyssey for a number of years. All models have it now.

I've read numerous reviews on the Odyssey and have come to recognizes reviewers like depressing the accelerator to produce acceleration and burn gas. I'm personally too old to race... but I do recognize the horsepower and torque are there if needed.

I really can't wait to tow with it.

This the first year the Odyssey's 6 speed transmission has been offered on the base model.

It should be noted that I do not step on it when driving. On the way down I drove at 60 mph on the way home in the 65 mph. I have not figured out what the best speed for max mpg is.

It does have the highest mpg rating and the highest overall rating of any minivan. Honda's ads state that the Sienna costs a little less but.....

I can't wait to tow with it.

Fantastic numbers and I know that you know Thompson of RV lifestyle regards that TV as excellent for its wide stance and some other features. Can't wait to see your next numbers.

Ha Ha I think you and I drive alike. The more you push the accelerator the more money is going out the window. The published numbers are 19/28 for the 2015 Honda Odyssey. Of course they never say what speeds those numbers are calculated at.

I have been following the travels of one of the couples on Airforums.com. They also have a newer Oddy. The owner is a techy gadget guy and installed a gizmo that crunches data from the vehicle and displays the current horsepower reading. After a trip he noticed the top horsepower reading was just over 175.
Not bad considering he was towing a good sized trailer.

It does show that huge amounts of power are not required to tow most trailers in most conditions.

Norms numbers also show that a 4,500lb vehicle can run 65MPH on 3 cylinders. Nice! Luv the technology.

Wayne, I have discovered that the early Odysseys with cylinder management were prone to rear motor mount failures. Since Honda's been producing these engines with cylinder management for 9 years, I would assume they have resolved the motor mount issue.

I've read conflicting information on the cylinder management, whether they shut off just two cylinders or actually can shut off a third cylinder. Regardless, it was definitely amazing on I-495.

I do recognize that the amount of horsepower to propel a car on a flat road is relatively small. It's the acceleration, the rate of change.

Isn't it, for most people, the rate of change that makes life difficult?

I am still wowed by this two day trip, maybe it's like a first 'wow' date.

Cavernous

The Odyssey is huge. If a family were traveling towing our Scamp 16 they would have plenty of room for two children to sleep in the Scamp.

Right now we can't imagine what we will do with all the available space. Ginny quite seriously says we could camp in the Odyssey. In Newfoundland we met a couple who were from Manitoba camping in their minivan.

We are now considering ways to use the Odyssey's space. Over 10 years with the CRV we had developed a storage strategy that worked well. The Odyssey is different and deserves new consideration.

Norm, good the hear the Honda is "wowing" you.

On mileage, I think your conservative driving style has much to do with the good results. Take a look at your car on www.fuelly.com. You will see mpg's all over the place with most of the difference being driving style.

I agree that new tech cars are wonderfully more efficient than just five or ten year older vehicles. Compared to my last Jeep Grand Cherokee (2005), my 2014 is larger, 14% heavier, has 31% more hp yet gets 60% better gas mileage! 27 mpg driving like you, 23-24 at freeway speeds, 16-17 towing the Snoozy 60-65 mph. This Jeep gets better mileage towing the trailer than my last one did not towing.

Denny,

There's no doubt the technology has made a huge difference.

I do think I'm a conservative driver, it came with age. As well one of our biggest monthly, variable expenses is fuel. The CRV was very good at towing our series of trailers varying between 20-22 mpg depending on the trailer. The difference was significant for us.

When we first started RVing we were weekend campers in our motor home. The mileage was irrelevant. Gas was a lot less expensive, we were working and it was infrequent, sort of like an expensive meal.

Continually on the road gas is a bigger deal. Gas has doubled in price since 2008, sort of like food prices, we're not working just spending and we're traveling all the time.

It's really important for us to stay on the road. I find travel to be good for our mental and physical health.

Thank you for the link. I believe driving style, driving type (city, highway, towing) and personal psyche (though in part that belongs in driving style) are all part of the equation.

On I-495 at rush hour there are plenty of crazies darting in and out, usually causing flow disruption. We attempt to be as steady as possible.
