With the wheel that far up in the wheel well either a small elephant has taken up residence or the axle is in serious trouble.
Several outside features look very old, further contributing to the thought that the axle is over 20 y.o. and has seen better days, and those days were 10-15 years ago.
BTW: W.W. tires are a give away to them being very old and will also have to be replaced.

That's a good picture of an axle in need of replacement!
You do need to realise though that any trailer from the seventies will ideally have it's axle replaced.

As Bob says, a new axle & new tires would be the first items on my replacement list for this trailer.

About $600. Be sure to get electric brakes on the new axle - only a few bucks and infinitely worth it.

Here is a link to Dexter axle, a leader in the business: See second link for a local dealer.

Better add another couple of hundred for new tires and wiring up the new brakes while you are at it.

Based on the age of the tires on it I would be surprised if its been used much in recent years so you may be looking at a new battery (good for only about 4 years) and propane tank (good for 12 years) as well.

eggless,
Others have given you the answer. If you or anybody else finding this thread in the future wants to know why, I posted in a thread how to determine if your axle needs replacing. The first few posts will tell you all you need to know. How I fixed it was my thing, you don't need to go that far.

Why do you think it needs painting? Looks like a good wash job and Red Max Pro would make it look a whole lot better. You don't NEED propane or a battery to use the trailer. Consider it a hard-sided tent and take whatever tenting stuff you have for cooking, etc.

eggless,
Any chance that is a boler American? If so I'd like the serial # and location to add to a thread.
I can't fit a trailer into a garage doing all my work outside. Donna D. has told many to consider your project as a tent on wheels. As long as it does not leak and you can tow it safely you can use it while you work on it. Our first major trip was over 3000 miles with duck tape closing a tree hole in the roof. You can see what is possible with a wreck here:
http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...can-25724.html
Six years later, I'm still working on it. They become a labour of love.

I do thank you though.
That concept is what made us become a trashed trailer owner.
We are well beyond that now.

Yes you are! For people, like Cricket, that are looking to buy, it's all about budget, expectations and skills. There's so much information here and people to provide instructional assistance, we know anything can be done. One of my other favorite sayings is it doesn't need to be perfect, just perfect for you!

It is a boler american. It needs painting i think...lots and lots of peeling and chipping paint...i can see at four colors....i am thinking i probably should have bought it, but do not want to end up in over my head and have a trailer partially finished sitting in my yard. How much is the average paint job?
