Kia Sorento 2.0L Turbo??

Is anyone out there towing with a current generation Kia Sorento with the 2.0L direct injection turbo engine? It's rated at 260 ft/lb torque over a broad range of 1,500 to 3,500 RPM. 3,500 lb towing, 350 lb tongue. 6-speed auto (not CVT) with overdrive. Estimated 20/27 MPG. Looks good on paper. Has anyone had one out on the road towing? Observations or comments? Curious minds want to know....

Considering your current vehicles ( both rated to tow way more than that Kia)
I suspect you may be going thru a mid-life crisis........buy a Corvette or Camero and retain your current tow vehicles...the Highlander should last forever. !

This curious mind wants to know, too, as we have a Kia Sportage (kinda whimpy in towing capacity) and are looking at a 13' Scamp.

Patrick, Although our 2002 Highlander with the 3.0L V6 and the 2016 Sorento with the 2.0L turbo are rated at the same 3,500 lb towing and 350 lb tongue, the 2016 Sorento has slightly more horsepower (240 vs 220) and considerably more torque (260 vs 222). Plus the Sorento has a 6-speed auto vs our Highlander's 4-speed (more gears would seem better for towing), and the Sorento tranny also has that faux manual mode (which would seem to be an advantage for hill climbing). So, we find the current generation Sorento intriguing/tempting for if/when we need a new tow vehicle. But again, that's all just numbers on paper. What we're curious about now is anyone's real world towing experience with a current generation Sorento 2.0L turbo. Oh, and for the record, I'm hoping my mid-life crisis vehicle will come on just two wheels. Zoom, zoom...

I'll be following this post as I'm interested in the Sorento also. Consumers Reports magazine seems to really like it. We're actually taking a tour of the Kia plant in AL next week while we're at the Green Eggs and Ham rally.

I am not in the market for a tow vehicle, but if I were, the Sorento would be on my short list. Personally, I'd prefer a few more years' reliability data before I decide, especially regarding the 2.0L engine, but Kia has come a long way in that respect.

I haven't heard anyone here mention using the new 2.0L turbo for towing yet. You might also try a general RV forum as well as the Kia owners' forum. Here's a thread on towing with a 2016 Sorento.

I recently spent 5 weeks and 3600 miles with a rental Hyundai Santa Fe while my Pilot was recuperating from a rear-ender. Kia and Hyundai are corporate siblings and share the same power plants. With the base 2.4L engine and AWD, the rental was peppy and light on its feet (compared to my Pilot, anyway). I expect the 2.0L turbo would be equally nimble but have more grunt for towing. Kia appears to have a nicer interior and less generic exterior styling to my eye.

My buddy spent six month without his Santa Fe waiting for engine parts. Dealer finally put a hitch on a service vehicle loaner so he could use his trailer. You can see "Service Vehicle" on the door.
Anyway, he bought a Toyota Highlander.

Out of curiosity, Glenn, what year and which engine?

Hey John, We'll be at GE&H, too. Catoma Loop#045. Come on by. The Kia plant is actually outside of West Point, GA, on your side of the Chattahoochee River, you can see it from I-85. The Hyundai plant is in Montgomery (just off I-65 on the South side of town), probably less than 30 miles from Gunter Hill Campground where the GE&H rally is being held. You could tour both while here. See you at Gunter Hill.... Dale

Best of my recollection he got his Santa Fe in 2009. It was V6.
Problem was with Hyundai's supplier. They couldn't provide Hyundai with parts and the dealer had scoured North America, but none to be had.
I think, in the end they re-bored the cylinders or some such, and did a creative rebuild.

I don't know. Dealer did everything they could. It was Hyundai that apparently didn't care all that much. There were several vehicles with the same issue waiting for parts in N.A.

Oops! You are correct, we have reservations for the Hyundai tour, not the Kia tour. We actually pass the Kia plant on our way down I-85 from GA but I don't see any links for scheduling a tour at their GA plant. I should have remembered that the KIA plant was in GA since their first Sorento went to the GA Governor. We will be on site 56, not too far from you.

A lot of the Koreans who moved to the US to work at the West Point, GA, Kia plant live across the Chattahoochee River in Auburn, AL, due in large part to Auburn's great K-12 school system for their children. From Auburn, it's a quick 30 mile commute straight up the interstate to the plant. As side benefits, Auburn now has an amazing Asian supermarket with in-store Asian fusion restaurant and a nice, big Kia dealership!

I like mine!

I have a 2011 with a 2.4L 4 banger. I love it! I used it to tow my 13 Scamp from Colorado to Michigan when I purchased it last February. Although it turned out to be an adventure, none of the issues were TV related. Acceleration in the high range was a bit slow but hey it's a 4cl. I towed to a camp site during a deluge and it tracked well through some serious rain covered roads. Finally, the AWD took me through some pretty steep rain-soaked clay two tracks that same night without a problem. I even rescued a trailer full of kayaks that was left at the bottom of one of those hills after I dropped the Scamp off in camp. It matters how you drive, but without the tow I average 22-24 mpg, with the Scamp it drops to 19 with 21 being the best I can get. Mpg really drops off if you are in a hurry...

We tow our Boler with a 07' Kia Sedonna and it is rated for #3500 and we had no problems at all pulling it through and over the great smokey mountains, couldn't even tell it was back there

Doesn't your Sedona have the big 3.8L V6?

The Sorento now offers a base 2.4L, a new (to the Sorento) 2.0L turbo in up-trim 5-passenger versions, and a 3.3L V6 in 7-passenger versions. Rated 2000# with the 2.4, 3500# with everything else, except 5000# in the V6 AWD.

As far as I tell, the turbo engine was first offered in 2016, which is why there isn't much real-world towing experience yet. Owner's forums are often the best place to scout out emerging issues with a new drivetrain.

Hey John, It was great meeting you at the GE&H Rally this past week/weekend. Thanks for stopping by our campsite. 90+ fiberglass rigs!! Great turnout this year! We hope to see you there again next year. Maybe we'll cross paths again somewhere out there between now and then. Safe travels until then.... Dale & Elaine

Hey Dale, Glad we could hook up at the rally. I enjoyed the tour at the Hyundai plant, that turbo engine sounds like it might be ideal for towing as long as it holds up. Our 05 Hyundai Accent engine is still purring away getting 35 MPG plus all the time (too bad I can't tow our Scamp with that one)
