I could be wrong here, but I think he may be a smidge over his tow capacity.

No, the Smart car is European, built in France, and so it is not possible to find a trailer over its towing capacity.....

Great low end torque.

Not if you get enough solar panels and a feedback circuit! and don't forget solar powered brakes!

I know that with my conventional Nissan gas-powered pick-up truck, I get about 20 mpg when not towing, and only about 11 mpg when I am towing. Curious as to what kind of cruising range you can achieve, both with and without, towing the trailer with that car.
I know that electric motors have a lot of low-end torque, but how does it tow at highway speeds?

Greg, It may tow at highway speeds but not very far. Our son uses it primarily to commute to work. It's range is about 75 miles, weather and temperature dependent. It is very cost effective, nothing down, $139 a month lease for 3 years.

I've driven it a few times and it's actually fun to drive and really perfect for getting around town.

No one has repealed the laws of physics yet.

With a trailer heavier than the car ... the tail WILL wag the dog.

No doubt, you are spoofing that the SMart Car could tow the scamp.

Wayne,
I am spoofing but many electric vehicles are heavier than our Scamp 16. A lot of the electric vehicles also have their weight centered low and between the axles.

Also I expect that the majority of people that tow, by a wide margin, are towing trailers that weigh more than their tow vehicles.

I am not sure about the electric version, but a gas Smart car has a 500 lb towing capacity, with a class 2 hitch. That's about 500 lbs more then I would have expected. It would be good for a motorcycle trailer.

Interesting. If my Toyota was not paid for and not costing me anything much in terms of repairs these days that might work, money wise. It is still more than I spend on fuel though, and it costs something to charge it.

Hope the url works. It is a list of cars that will pull a 1250 kilogram (2700lb???) trailer

The Curtis Publishing company in Sharon Hill, PA used electric trucks when I was a kid. They had a load capacity of 10 tons! Speed when hauling was only 6 MPH though.

Here's an electrically driven truck...
Claims 40mph... well below the safe tire speed for a Scamp13 and almost large enough to make the TV safety margin.

I noticed the sly use of the word 'driven' in there. Anything containing a 3500+hp diesel engine isn't exactly a pure electric vehicle....

Depends on what you mean by "pure." All electrically-driven vehicles get their electricity from a generator somewhere powered by some other energy source. This one just happens to carry its own generating station.
