Trailer: Boler 1300 Deluxe
Posts: 1
Good day all...we recently (yesterday) purchased a 1978 boler 13 foot (deluxe) - in removing from our hitch i had great difficulty lifting it - the trailer only weighs 1000 lb so on the trailer i should have no issue moving it around - am looking to see if anyone either knows the approximate tongue weight of this unit OR if i need to modify the hitch - we will be towing with a mazda 6
any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Hi Steve,

What do you have on the front of the trailer? Single or double propane tanks? Battery or batteries? I know my 1972 Trillium with dual propane tanks and outboard battery is much harder to move then my 1976 with just 1 propane tank.

Generally most small cars have a limited tongue weight between 100-150lbs, you Mazda 6 manual will state it in there.

How do you know it only weighs 1000 lbs? Scale? Or 'paper'?

The tongue weight should be 10-12% of the actual total weight. So, if you weigh the axle and tongue jack weight on a scale, loaded for the road, and it all weighs 1000 lbs, then 100-120 lbs of that should be on the tongue.

OTOH. if you are using 'paper' weights (Manf brochure, frame tag, title, etc.) and it really weighs 1,500 lbs loaded, then TW should be 150-180 lbs. My 91S13 weighs 1,700 loaded for the road.

Too light on the tongue is a setup for sway; err on the heavy side.

the 13 footers have a suprisingly heavy tongue weight. The trailers them selves are light but so much of the weight is sitting over the short 3 foot tongue. Someone here weighed it on a previous thread and I think it was well over 200 pounds. I am unable to lift mine for long (never mind moving it) so mine is well over 200 and thats with a deep cycle and empty propane tank (expired)
