Mike - when you're NOT carrying the canoe, if you want to quiet down the rack, spiral a snubber (aka bungee cord) the front edge of the rack. Mine came out to about 6" of rack showing between the snubber spirals. Someone suggested this for me, and I thought, PSHAW! But it really works!

The bungee breaks the airflow, and thereby the vibration. So, be sure to wrap so it will interrupt that flow (leave gaps). And just hook at each end.

It would help if everyone posted mpg without towing for their vehicle as well.

Tow Vehicle:2000 Subaru Forester 5 spd manual transmission
Mileage empty: 27-28 mpg highway
Trailer: '70 Trailswest Campster, weight about 1000 lbs (hasn't been weighed packed but I don't carry much.)
Last trip: Washington to California down 101 and I5 and 99
Mileage towing 18-20 mpg
Speed 55-60 with trailer, 65-75 without.

Lee ..My Element had no problem towing Questa Grade(grade north of San Luis Obispo ).

It looks as if you do not have a cover for the bed of your El Camino.

According to "Myth Busters" you will get a slight increase in MPG if you cover the bed. Anything will do; rag, metal, or plastic.

The aerodynamics may be vastly changed by the presence of that Rolling Air Dam closely following the bed...
