Welcome to the forum, Travis.
I might add to my previous comments that I'm sure the vast, vast majority of Curt receivers hold up fine. Broken hitch receivers of any brand are pretty rare. I am unusual in my usage pattern, in that mine gets used day in and day out for about 20k to 25k miles per year. And my tongue
weight gets pretty close to the rated capacity (although I spend all day offloading, a little at a time, through the side door). So maybe I'm stressing my receiver more than the average person.
This one that broke did have the 3" wide muffler clearance strap; I just measured it. And they had made this one's side strap (the broken part) protrude down farther than the original, with an extra little outward bend in it there to add stiffness. It did last three times as long, probably thanks to those improvements.
The customer service at Curt was fine IMO. They probably would have replaced this one again if I had told them about it.
