Bolted on to welded brackets, rather than welded to the frame...

What kind of axle? I think some of them have replaceable spindles so that if you damage a spindle you don't need to replace the whole axle. That seems like an advantage. Definitely go with brakes.

Your Trillium has a torque-flex type axle on it. If you want brakes, get electric ones. This also means that you will need a brake controller in the TV if you don't have one already. On a Dexter axle the E-Z Lube is a nice feature. Also, get the brackets that welds to the frame and allows the new axle to bolt on.

This first link lists the original specs for your axle. This is pretty much all the info you need to get one like the original.

This second link is where I bought mine. Good prices, nice to work with.

I would purchase a new one over a used one, you already have a used one!

Good luck on your project.

Find out if the new axle will change the overall height of the vehicle and wether that will effect your storage needs.

Brakes are a must. Capacity should be considered as well. My Trillium 4500 came with a 2000lb axle. New Trillium 1500 (metric 4500) are specified as 1700lb. This would have left 300lb for gear, food, luggage.... Not enough. The frame is built to handle more. I had my axle and coupler changed to carry more stuff. I have 5 kids.
