New tow vehicle

Here is the tow vehicle I plan to use this summer.

1966 Mercury Comet convertible.

Its got the 289. Automatic trans. No hitch yet that will be the key, I have to get one that doesn't look too big and bulky. Maybe one of those series 1 removable ones.

If i recall, the license plate is mounted to the bumper on that car. (but I think the gas filler is there, too - so ferget it!)

I was gonna suggest a custom hitch where the receiver is behind the lic plate so it is invisible when not in use - but if the gas filler is already there,.....

BC Dave. I like the license plate idea. Here's a pic of it from the back before I put my plates on it. As you can see no gas filler. It's on the quarter panel. I could easily cut a small square in the bumper. I just have to see if there is room behind it for the hitch to mount.

You may have to find a place that does custom hitch build/install work - but then again, it is highly unlikely that any shop has one "in stock" to fit your car anyway!

Hit up a junkyard to get a license plate holder with the spring-loaded hinges (as used by cars that DO have the filler behind the plate)

Mount it so it swings DOWN to access the hitch

Totally outta sight when not in use, easily accessed when you need it

A lot of hotrodders do that to hide the hitch and still be able to haul their (usually Boler) F/G trailers to events

The license plate won't be visible when swung down. I wonder if that is legal.

Beautiful car. My thought is that you can't be the first to face this issue and I am sure there is an answer out there or that is what I always tell myself when I am having an issue and I'm usually right!

The only time the plate will be swung down is when the trailer is hitched on.

I have never seen ANY tug where the lic is visible when there is a trailer hitched on!

Autowrecker was my thought as well. I have already been to my local yards lookng for parts and I was planning a return trip once it warms up. As farbas the hitch goes I will weld something up custom myself. I have some 2" receiver stock left from another custom hitch I made a couple years ago. I just need to see how much room is behind the bumper and what kind of structure I can get to.

If poss, install the plug-in for your trailer wiring up in behind the bumper, too! When the plate is "up", no-one need to know there is ANY hitch/tow provision back there, but when ya wanna pull your trailer, the cars has all the necessary for the job!

I almost wish I hadn't painted the Boler last spring. For the moment things will remain the way they are. I may paint the car in a couple years. I still have to talk to the insurance company about towing the trailer. I have silver wheels classic car insurance on it so I think I can tow the trailer because its a classic as long as I insure it with them. They specify absolutely no towing of utility trailers. Thats the price of only paying $100 per year for car insurance.
