I first looked at this Pro Series sway control on eTrailer and ended up ordering it from Amazon. The installation sheet listed Cequent Performance Products as distributor and tech support. After installing the balls on both ends, I tried to adjust it as described in the installation sheet. I found that when I closed the handle until the threads bottomed out as suggested, the lower adjusting bolt was too short. With proper tension on the controller, the lower bolt only went about half way through the nut. I called Cequent and talked to Craig, who seems to know a lot about these devices. He said that he likes to set them up by loosening the bottom bolt, then screw in the handle to within a couple of threads of "bottom", then hand tighten the bottom bolt, then tighten down the handle until it bottoms out. He said this usually is a good starting point for adjusting the tension. I followed his procedure and came to the same results as before. The lower bolt was too short to fill the nut, plus there were other "fit" issues as shown in the attached photos. The upper handle was not seating flush with the compression plate, and the lower bolt was not seating well either. Also, the compression plate was uneven against the main body. There was no space above the bend in the center of the plate and too much space below the bend. Fortunately, I was able to fix all of these flaws by adding a 1/8" spacer (washer) between the compression plate and the upper nut, as seen in the pictures. Doing this resolved all of the above issues at once. I mainly wanted to get it so that when adjusted, the lower bolt would be inserted fully in the nut, which it now is. The rest was just lagniappe, as my daddy used to say. I don't know if my compression plate was bent too much and others fit better than this, or if they are all flawed as was mine. I was just glad to get it fixed without having to try to reshape the compression plate.
I installed this sway control in case I need some help in a high wind situation. I plan to install it only if there is an apparent need. I have so far not had any sway control issues pulling the
Scamp 16, so I'm not really sure how to go about adjusting the tension. I think I'll just use Craig's "two thread rule" and see how it pulls.
I'm now thinking that there are good reasons why some sway controllers cost more than others, even though they look basically the same.
