Pushing the limits

Folks new to trailer camping seem bound and determined to push the limits when selecting a new trailer. While trying to cling to their current daily driver they post a discussion concerning towing capacities while trying to ignor the manufacturers established safe maximum weight ratings. I guess they are hoping to get lucky and hear stories of a 2,000 pound rated vehicle towing a trailer that exceeds that limit by a thousand pounds or more. Then, suprise! ...here comes a reply (or two or three) about some uninformed camper who has gotten away with such an unsafe foolish towing endeavor. I'd guess that makes stupidity O.K.

Every RV open forum site is littered with examples of this dangerous exchange of bad information.


Human nature being what it is such posters will focus on any answer that fits their goal while ignoring the good safe advise posted by many others....sooner or later we will see a story about a camper towing his 16foot Scamp with a bicycle in the Rocky Mountains!

This forum is full of can I pull a .... with a .... threads. I don't believe the arguments serve any useful purpose. In the end we all dig our own holes and the adage about the electric fence certainly applies. Raz

I, a newbie, started just such a thread here recently, and wow! Sure am learning a lot, like don't go for the smallest tow vehicle you can get away with. That seems pretty basic. A smart car towing a fully loaded fifth wheel is not the goal! Err on the side of extreme caution. If I finally buy as planned a couple of years from now, I will have a tow vehicle and hitch arrangement that offers great peace of mind. Thank you for the reminder, Uplander. You are a smart person.

and that goes for both ends of the scale...

Towing out of New York or L.A. on a regular basis is different than somebody who lives in a town of 30,000 and wants a TT to tow it to the beach twenty miles away half a dozen times a summer....

This is an old topic beat to death, and we do not need to bring a new low to the subject, so I am closing this thread.

People will, and should, decide for themselves what to do. It has been shown that there is no swaying of opinions. In any thread on the subject, I would suggest that anyone with an opinion state it, and then move on, without having to further rehash things in the same thread.
