Rear Cargo Carrier
I want to add a rear cargo carrier, I need it to haul 4 five gallon water jugs and a plastic tote with maybe 100lbs in it. This is what I'm looking at, its rated for 500lbs, question is will the rear bumper on my Scamp 16ft hold it?

Handling Issues
I don't think the factory hitch receiver was intended for anywhere near that weight. It's supposed to be limited to only 2 bicycles. We have carried 4 on the back of our Scamp 13', but they were children's and ultralight models, under 150# total. Even then, I noticed an increased tendency to sway. Your 16' is probably more stable than our 13', but I would be very leery of putting that much weight (275#??) that far back.

I tend to agree with Jon, I would be very scared of putting that kind of weight right at the rear of my trailer. I am not sure what would worry me more the Scamp receiver not holding up or the instability of the tow that extra weight will cause.

160+ lbs of water plus the weight of the cargo carrier.
Not a good idea.

The water weight is what's going to kill this idea. Not sure what your tow vehicle is but, you may want to look at a roof basket to hold your water instead. That's where I typically carry water tanks if I'm going to need them.

Add to the 160 lbs of water the 100 lb tote also mentioned, and you have a recipe for disaster. That much weight on the bumper will not only leave you bumperless, but, until that happens, you would have to add additional weight back up front top maintain the hitch weight you need.
BTW: One good woop-de-do and that carried will weigh 600 lbs on the way down.

The water weight is much much closer to the axle, therefore has less effect.

You think?
either way the tug isn't whats killing this set up or not change anything.
One question does come to mind - why do u need to take so much water? No place to pick up water close to where your going? or not able to get to someplace to refill some 5 gallon totes while exploring the area?

14 mile round trip.....lol I know I can put the water in the bed of the truck, just wanted to free up space. I stand corrected on the Tug, I like that better.

Not when he's putting it on a cargo rack on the rear bumper...
