Scamp 13 hitch height 16-18" means...

Hooked my scamp up myself today to my new to me 2007 chevy express wheelchair van (my bro is brain injured and paralyzed). Sold the truck in march.

When scamp says 16-18" hitch height, do they mean when hooked up, top of ball, tonge/a frame itself?

I'm hooked up right now in my driveway, and here's my measurements:

Ball under coupler, tippy top of coupler: 16-3/4 max

A frame middle of coupler: 17-1/4" max approx.

Is that ok? Here's some pics.

I can't really tell from the photos. I like to park the tug and tow on level ground and look at the trailer. If the trailer is level or the tongue is slightly lower you should be OK. It's best to not totally count on book specifications here. An axle or wheel change or suspension change can make published numbers useless.

Wendy what Scamp says is a guide line - what the measurement ends up actually being to make the trailer level on the ball may differ from trailer to trailer - due to axle drop etc.

Cant really tell from such close up pictures as to the state of the trailer as far as level goes - although one looks like the tongue *may* be *slightly* up.

The key is just get it level or with the tongue slightly down.

It is slightly higher than level, you're right. I have a 1" rise on that receiver.

That's why I asked the question about what scamp says, didn't know what that meant. Having a hard time finding anything lower. Maybe I need a 1/2" drop instead?

Floyd, late model means like mine, a 2012? I had heard it should be level or slightly lower, but didn't know if what I had was ok as I didn't understand scamps specs.

Back to the receiver drawing board I guess. No idea what to get so maybe I'll try a1/2" or straight bar?

If late model means newer then I'm assuming trailer is level at 18"? I probably don t understand clearly, but if I'm off at all by being a bit too high, I don't think it's a lot.

I called ETrailer. The ball mount I have is the least rise they sell. I just checked it again and I was mistaken earlier. I have 2" drop, 3/4" rise, not 1".

Wendy, I can't really get a good look at the stinger....even with zooming in. It kind of looks like you've got the ball in the rise position, at least from the pic. If so, turn the stinger over 180* and remount the ball for the drop.
Show us another pic up close, 3/4 angle please.

Wendy what Dave has suggest would be what I would try first to get the tongue to drop a bit more if the receiver you have on there now has a bit of rise - flip it for the drop. If its still not level or slightly down you might need to find yourself a 2" drop receiver.

I just turned the stinger around to the 2 inch drop side. Level says a little low. Top of coupler is now 14". Here's some pics. So basically it appears a little nose down now. Before on 3/4" rise side it was a little nose up. Don't know what to do!

Leave it ....the level indicates its not nose down by much - you will be way happier than with it nose up!

Thank you! Finally figured it out. Thank you so much for all of your help and encouragement- everybody. I've learned and continue to lwRn tons, and as I admit, mechanics was not a born in natural thing for me. It's taken dogged persistence and great help.

Btw..my friend let me borrow his brand new tongue weight scale today, so I weighed her in and she's 180 pounds when at the same height/level she'll be when hooked up. That's exactly 12 percent of total weight, assuming my trailer is approx 1500 pounds. Whoopee!

You're OK now. Just make sure your ball is torqued real tight to the stinger.
and check for looseness between the stinger and receiver, If so, try to shim the gaps on top and sides with short pieces of hacksaw blade. Or, you may be able to find a snubber kit at the hitch store. WHY? you ask. Because looseness can aggravate side sway. And will hasten wear.

Ha ha! I'm sure I'll think of something! . Wouldn't you be bored without all of my questions?

Next up is little window sealant job and then finally, school is out and I go camping!

Thanks Carol for the compliments. I always appreciate the help here; gives me the courage to try!

And I promise I will try to wait 24 hours till I pose my next question.
