Good job Taylor!

We needed the air springs at first. After we got the Toyota TSB T-SB-0305-08 done for the new leaf springs I am not sure they were needed.

See a list of TSBs at:

Hi Taylor thats a nice setup. I used to pull my scamp 5th wheel with my 2003 taco dbl cab short bed. Now I have the 2014 dbl cab short bed and after talking to toyota and Scamp and a few installers Im getting spooked about voiding my warranty. wondering if Long u-bolts would work? Go around the frame instead of welding to it or drilling through it?

Welcome Dave
The thread is about four years old but you may get a reply from a Taco owner.
I tow my 5er with a Frontier so I don't have the plastic bed issues. The two newer Tacos I have seen towing 5ers the owners made a 2X2 tube steel frame and mounted it above the bed floor. The owners bolted the frame to the truck bed with longer bolts (grade 8) and spacers where the bed attaches to the frame. They then attached the hitch to the 2x2 steel frame. Hope this helps.
Eddie

Scamp hitch in Tacoma bed

Almost a year ago I bought my 2013 Tacoma SR5, four door, short bed, V6, with towing package. The plan was to tow a 5th wheel Scamp. A used 5th wheel Deluxe Scamp suddenly showed up for sale and I was in a hurry to get it, so after agonizing over it for a few days, I mounted the hitch myself. Here are the pictures of how it came out. The hitch kit came from Scamp ($490 + $90 s/h). I had to get four simple 3/8 inch flat steel parts made by a shop that builds custom trucks, drill holes in steel, cut the rails shorter to fit the bed, etc, but in the end it was not too difficult to do. The hitch is mounted using four of the six bed mounting bolts, so it is connected to both the frame and the bed. The SMC (sheet molding compound) that the bed is made of is tough and will never rust like a steel bed, so I think over long term this is a good arrangement. I wanted to share the pics in case they might help here. I have also written a step by step how I did it, I can post it if there is interest. It seems that I can only upload four pictures at a time, so two more are in the next post.

This is amazing

Paul I'm in my car but had to pull over and read your post. I can't thank you enough. I just left a metal fab place in Reno and they are talking $2000.00 and lining the entire bed with 1/4 inch steel plate. Needless to say I was feeling pretty low till I saw your post.
