Scamp, S19 custom hitch - Toyota Tacoma
This is a link to a photo of the hitch I am building for my Tacoma. Using the rails and Bows for a 5th wheel , welding a cross bar and receiver on and away you go. The author of this post said it worked very well

Hi Taylor
I also use the Toyota Tacoma to tow a fifth wheel. I had my hitch install at a local shop but they had numerous problems attaching the brackets to the frame. If you have any questions or would like any pictures just ask.

thahks for posting that again.. I was just out to my RV place and trying to explain how someone had 'modified' the 5th wheel hitch... I wish I could put one in the bed of my truck..
its such a pain to keep the ones they make in there all yr long... I can haul to much when not using the trailer...
Is this one 'custom. made?
Where do you get the bows?
if I had step by step instructions I am sure I could get a machine shop to make one for me.?
or if Ya wanna volunteer to make one I would pay you?

I see that the whole thing is based on welding to the frame (Tony's photo #5) -- Is this OK'd by Toyota?
Many truck frames are heat-treated and may lose strength in critical areas if they are subsequently welded rather than bolted -- Some vehicle manfs don't even want non-factory holes drilled for bolts. A good weld by a certified welder would be a stronger attachment that bolts, but bolting would potentially weaken the frame less and also allow removal if desired.
I did a quick skim of an installation PDF for a 5W hitch from ETrailer and see that they included markings for where one can weld on Ford, Dodge, Chevy and the Tundra.

The safety chains are hooked up incorrectly in that photo -- The S-hook should be coming up from the bottom of the hole, not down from the top -- Harder to bounce it out of the hole that way.

Might not do any good, but I would just in case some cop having a bad day was looking for something to write up in a state that requires crossing.

The Mod for my Tacoma is almost complete. It was a chore to make the correct shims to support the Composite bed . I used A set of Reese 5th wheel rails and Bows. We did not weld to the frame it is bolted on. .We used aluminum to make the shims to avoid future rust problems. Any RV dealer can supply the rails and Bows , But they shake there head when you explain what you are building. Photos to follow in a few days.

That hitch and rig were originally mine, sold it to Blair when we bought the 07C19SD. I had the hitch made by Huntsville Steel in Huntsville, TX. It was a good thing from the git-go and with the Shocker Air hitch changed the whole feel of towing the 5vr. It was interesting to watch the 'bobbing' that the trailer was doing and never feel a thing in the cab.
Hi Taylor, welcome back from sea duty - hope the tailgate works for you.
Pete - before doing the welding we (Huntsville Steel and I) did speak with the Toyota regional rep and a few days later he got back to us and told us that nobody would say it was OK to weld but then again no one said not too. (Must be a legal liability thing.) I agree with you that it would be better to mount the S hooks from the bottom rather than from the top as show in the photo. I always crossed the chains while thinking there really was no 'tongue' to catch - old habit, I guess.
Those photos are posted on Flickr with my other mods.

george my mod will be completed in a few days. I used the rails and bows from a Reese 5th wheel. The rails are bolted to the frame we wanted to be able to diassemble the whole thing if need be. I will have photos in a few days

Good job Taylor!
We needed the air springs at first. After we got the Toyota TSB T-SB-0305-08 done for the new leaf springs I am not sure they were needed.
See a list of TSBs at:
