Scamp axle

Are the axels on an 1986 13' Scamp welded or bolted to the frame? I am considering buying one. I am 6' 2 ", am I going to have to crouch very much when I am inside of it if I buy it?

Ceiling height is 6'1".
Take your shoes off and you won't have to crouch very much.

That's tolerable. I was just thinking, after a day of hiking, fishing or chasing grandkids I probably have a tired slouch anyway.

You might be slouching more than you think if you are looking at a 1986 Scamp. The ceiling height in my 1990 S13 is only 5' 10". That is my height and I just brush the rat fur on top if I stand up straight. My big problems are the switches on my roof fan, which stick down an inch or so. Seems like I'm regularly turning the fan on by accident when the vent is open.

The original axle will have been welded to the frame -- If the axle has been replaced, it's also likely that it will also have been welded, but it is possible to buy a bracket that can be welded to the frame, to which an axle can be bolted.

Dexter, the likely manf of the axle, recommends that a torsion axle retain at least 3" of 'bump clearance' between the top of the tire and the inside top of the fender well -- If you can get your clenched fist in there, that's enuf -- Also look up in there and see if there are any signs of the tires rubbing on bounces (not good).

Over the years, the axle have come with increasing weight specs on the torsion rubber (it's cut to length for the desired spec), but they were all ordered with 22.5* down angle -- If the arm at the spindle is pointing up, the axle is likely worn.

What's the actual length of the floor in a 13' Scamp, where one is likely to stand upright? If you're doing dishes at the sink...you'll probably be looking down. Other than walking from the door to the dinette/bed, you'll spend most of your time sitting/laying down. Granted it would be nice for anyone of any height to be able to stand upright, but if you want the 13' Scamp, inside height may be less of a factor than the size of the bed.

I do not mind an inch or 2. I looked at a Love Bug in Bakersfield Ca. several weeks ago. I did not make an offer because I was about 5 inches to tall. I even touch the ceiling in my Burro if I do not slouch a little bit, which is OK. I just do not want to have something that is 4 or 5 inches to short.

Trailer mfgs. no longer recommend axles w/forward swing arms. I installed a new Dexter axel w/rear swing arms & a zero degree angle. This Raised the camper 1 1/2" which I like.
The axle now is under the dropped floor as is the new Scamps.

I just got home with a 1986 13' height challenged Scamp that I just bought and as soon as possible I want to change the axel.

I picked it up today. I do have to slouch a bit but it is tolerable. It's + 100 degrees where I camp in the summer. If I install an A/C unit I will have to wear a hard hat.

Be very careful ordering an axle using someone else's axle number -- There are a lot of options and measurements on these axles and the specs may change from one year to another even from the same manf -- I'd call Scamp and get their input also.

My axel has the same dimensions as the original, however it's mounted under the dropped floor & has a zero angle vs. the original 22.5 down. The toe in is also reversed for this application. This is what Scamp is doing on their new models....Don
