Tow Vehicle & Trailer combos - POST INFO

Myself, I'd just keep the Sequoia. To me 90K is barely broken in. I don't about the reliability record or issues for your year and drivetrain, but 90K alone is no reason to trade a vehicle these days, especially if you've already invested in setting it up for towing.

On the other hand, if you have the resources and want a new(er) vehicle… I doubt a 4Runner will get much better mileage towing, but it will probably do better in everyday driving, and it won't be as much of a parking lot monster.

Agree with that- and you would be going backwards if you want to tow a 21 Escape which weighs 4000#'s+ wet. Several 21 owners started with a 4Runner and did not like all the work involved in keeping the RPM's up during climbing any significant grades.

Thanks Francene, database has been updated.

Jim, I sent you a PM about my Highlander towing experience... it's been very good. With the length and the hitch weight of the 21' Escape you would want a WDH... the Andersen worked well for me.

Good info, Nick. Have you ever weighed your Love Bug? I would have guessed a heavier weight once loaded for camping... but then, you may load very little in it for all I know. The fuel economy of your rig is pretty nice.

No I haven't had it on a scale to get an exact number, but it's pretty stripped down. No holding tanks, or propane. We also pack pretty light...I think without the bike's on the Jeeps roof it would possibly do better. I track every fill up with or without towing a trailer.

I'm bumping this thread back to the top for all the new members who may not have seen it, and for anyone who wants to have their data posted to the table. Post your vehicle make, model, year, engine size, trailer brand and size, trailer weight, and fuel economy numbers both towing and non-towing. I'll add it when I get a chance.

trailer tires - Kumho 857, 195R14C, load rate D; speed rate Q
mpg towing 12-13 @ 60 mph
mpg not towing 24-25 mpg @ 70 mph

I don't obsess over the mileage - 14-17? I drive faster when not towing so it's probably not much different either way. As they say, ymmv.

Thanks. Do you mean anywhere from 14 to 17 when towing? Or 14 towing and 17 not towing?

Mike,
I've only had the trailer for two months and haven't checked the mileage when towing. That said, based on range, there's little difference in range based on my driving habits - 60-65 mph towing, 75-80 without. Also, I haven't yet taken it out of the Florida Flatlands. I expect different results when crossing the Front Range in a headwind.

So many variables make ad hoc mileage comparisons very iffy.

Subjectively, very happy with performance of the Tundra as a TV.

Tires: Goodyear Marathon 15" D-range
Brake controller: Hopkins Insight (self-installed)
Also have friction anti-sway but it tows the same without it.
Not using WDH.

mileage:
17L per 100k on highway only (14 miles per US gallon...17 per Imp. gallon)
25L per 100k when a lot of off-highway driving is included

(generally speaking...at can. gas prices I figure 25 cents per kilometer if I'm curious about how much the gas cost of a trip is going to be)

towing

We tow with a Toyota 07 Sequoia SR-5 4.7 L v-8 .
1- 2500 lb Snoozy we get 12-14 towing in Florida about 60-65 mph
2- 5000 lb c-dory boat and trailer 10-12 mpg about 60 mph

Our Question is we are picking up a 21 ft Escape next Fall I was thinking of flying out to Seattle and renting a pickup truck or Van and tow home the 21 Escape has anyone done this ?

No trips yet, so can't report on mileage. Truck gets pretty lousy mileage anyway (c. 14 mph), so I don't expect it to get better—but maybe not much worse, as Casita is pretty light.
