Towing an Escape 19'

Just came back 200 mile round trip weekend, managed 14.1 mpg towing @ 62 mph and 15.5 @ 40 mph with a Dodge Ram 4x4 BigHorn hemi with 6 speed auto. Did not use tow mode which cuts out o/d and keeps it in 5th. Terrain was hilly with some climbs to 1000 feet. Trailer was loaded with food and tanks were 25% full. I checked the tongue weight- 350#. Normal towing SOB is 12 mpg, normal driving is 12 mpg. Mid-range gas, 10,000 miles on odometer with cap on rear and 2 passengers and 2 dogs and 150 lbs in truck bed (grill/chairs/firewood)
Going to try another trip with Jeep Liberty v-6 to compare.

You got 2.1 mpg more towing than non-towing? Or I badly misunderstood

Donna,
I normally average 12 mpg overall/highway/city. This trip I was on interstates which I can sometimes get 16-18 mpg not towing. I was pleased with the 14-15.5 towing on highways.

I do not know, I have not had it weighed. The paperwork says 2500# but we know that is without options/accessories. I'd estimate 3000#

I did find this on the MoPar page about my motor
"The second generation 5.7 Hemi produced 390 horsepower and 407 lb-ft of torque in the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, using variable cam timing; it shuts off four cylinders when possible to get good mileage."

Sometimes it goes into the fuel saving mode, particularly on flat highways, even at 60 mph. I was always taught to drive like you have a egg between your foot and the gas pedal, this seems to work with this setup. The only mod I have done to truck is a cold air intake which may boost it to 400 hp. With a 25 gallon tank though, fill ups approach $75-$100 using midrange gas.

Did you get your fuel mileage readings from onboard readouts or from... fill-up, odometer reading and math?

I have a 2011 Ram SLT with the Hemi engine. On a 700 mile trip the gas mileage shown on the on board computer , on my Garmin GPS readout and the old reliable fill and divide method only varied + or- 1/10 MPG.

Jim, have you monitored your engine and transmission temps when you run without tow /haul ?. When pulling my 16 ft. Scamp the transmission runs cooler if I tow using tow /haul , but the mileage drops slightly. Just curious

Interestingly, my trans temperature changes little while towing. What I'm amazed is my oil temperature is always hotter than anything else, and it is synthetic. Is that the reason? Does animal base oil run cooler? I have nothing to compare with.

synthetic oil and non synthetic oil come from the same base stock crude, the synthetic oil is just refined much further, the difference in oil will have minimal difference in temps. i put a trans and engine oil temp guages in a previous tow vehicle because i was worried about the trans temp, interestingly enough no matter how i drove i couldn't over heat the trans oil but holy cow the engine oil temp got hot while in the mountains here is alberta and b.c.

I thought my engine oil temp seemed high when towing so I called Chrysler , the auto dealer where I bought the truck and a buddy of mine who is the mechanic foreman for the twin cities metro transit (bus ) and got the same answer Yes it will run hotter when towing ,or heavily loaded and they all recommended running synthetic oil in the specified grade and meeting factory specs . Floyd knows a lot about engines and oil maybe he can add something to the discussion , I only know what I'm told or what I read so I'm no expert

Oil Temoperature

What temperatures are you reading when you say "high oil temperatures"?

Thank you

If I recall, around 220 and if I remember correctly 212 is boiling temperature for water, not sure for oil. Note the pressure gauge is always in the middle or normal, radiator temperature also in middle or normal. Just do not know what is normal is for oil temperature.

The flash point for synthetic oil is over 400 F the operating temp depends on many things including air conditioning adding load.
For turbos needing higher operating temp its perfect.

We drove across the Cascade Mts today from Seattle and I took the opportunity to see how the air conditioner affected the engine as we were rolling in a down hill section.

Turning the air conditioner on caused the % of Engine load to increase from about 25% to 31% when the AC was activated... my foot was off the accelerator, we were in neutral coasting down hill doing about 60 mph.

This was a long day for us, about 175 miles. We drove between 55-60 mph in relatively light traffic, I guess anything would seem light after leaving Seattle.

Unfortunately the CRV does not report oil temperature, though on the 30-40 mile up hill crossing of the Cascades, the coolant temperature rose to 203 F on one occasion, generally staying in the mid 190 F range for most of the run. Temps are in the high 90's today.

I use mineral based oil or a parasynthetic in my cars, and in forty years of towing and hard driving, I have never had a part which ran in oil show wear.
Pure synthetic oils such as MOBIL 1 are possibly the best oil available and give greater shear strength than simple refined oil and an extra measure of protection, but all modern engine oils are far superior to what was available even a few years ago.

To avoid damage on modern engines I would say be concerned about any code which warns of a lean condition under a load, any misfire codes and also be aware of hard engine braking.
Keep your fuel system clean and change the air and fuel filters as needed.
WARNING...COMMERCIAL!....
For modern fuel injected gasoline engines
Use CHEVRON ProGard Fuel injection cleaner(techron) every 10,000 miles to avoid the fuel problems which range from poor performance to oil contamination.
