Towing with Nissan X Trail

Does anyone tow with a X Trail ? Specs show towing capacity of 2000lbs, tongue weight of 200lbs. Engine is a 4 cyl 2.5 L. A friend has one and says it does fine with his 13' Trillium. Just wondering if anyone has a real life experience with this vehicle.

Good day Harvey.

We have a couple things in common. My parents were from "the valley", and we have been towing with Nissans for the past 15 years.

Sorry I am not up to speed on your particular vehicle but we do know that it has 165HP and the Nissan drivetrain is well put together and reliable.

To put things in perspective our V6 Nissan Minivan had only 150 HP and we had no issues towing our 23' Airstream. The van had no drivetrain issues/problems even with 430,000 klm's on it.

Hopefully some of the folks here have experiance with the X and can be helpful. Good luck with the process.

Harvey, The best advise is to tow within the guidelines of the vehicles manufactures guidelines.

Most "13fters" are under 2000 pounds so that shouldn't be an huge issue. And if you are careful of all the camping gear you pack, you should be fine. In my opinion a 4 cyl would struggle on grades, but if you don't mind that you should be ok.


Best advice I can give is weigh your trailer both empty and then again packed. Know what your hauling, don't just assume! Best of luck to you......

A little off your question, but is this vehicle not available in the U.S.?
I was recently up in Bellingham, WA and saw several X-TRAILS with Canadian plates at the airport there. Just curious.

Thanks for the replys. I was aware it was only sold in Canada (2005 & 06). Seems to have plenty of power for a 4 cyl.

We have towed our 13Scamp to every corner of the Continental U.S. with a Ford Escape 2.3L 4CYL 5Spd Manual and it does wonderfully. it looks like your Nissan X was built to be direct competition. With that little engine you will find that the MPG will be speed sensitive. BIG savings under 95KPH!

Agreed, 90 KPH or 55 MPH seems to be the sweet spot.

I have an xtail but we only tow a wazat teardrop style trailer. pulls great . pulling to the max gross weight would be very hard on it going up steep hills. we pulled it around Cabot trail last yr and there were a few points that were tough but all in all it did great.

Our van had only 150HP. We towed this 2,000lb Colman Rio Grande around the Cabot Trail about 10 years ago. The big hill near the end (top pic)(we did it counter clockwise) was no problem.

WAZAT and MC1, I grew up on Cape Breton Island, very familar with the Cabot Trail. We usually make the tour every few years now. Very steep hills, you want to make sure you have good brakes.
