I just added the installation instructions that I got with the Ultimate Jack to the files section. It includes some measurements that might be of help.

Thanks, Gordon, helps a lot. Now I understand the plastic retainer that Mary & Bob spoke of. For the few amount of times I may have to remove it, seems okay. I normally have Loctite in my tool kit.

I do blame myself... not for failure to secure the pin, but failing to observe it's condition.
The pin that came with my jack and that I had a failure with is on the lower right. I got a replacement that should prevent future problems (upper left).

I put a safety chain on my Ultimate Jack, so it can't drop if some part fails.

Lately I can't get photos to load onto a post, done it before but it won't work now. All I did was use a short piece of chain with a carabiner type hook on it. I leave the foot on the jack, it has a hole near the edge, enlarged the hole to make it easier to get the hook in, fastened the other end of the chain to a piece on the frame. If for some reason the latch fails, the jack can only drop an inch or so, can't drag on the road. I was more concerned about wear in one of the locating holes or the pin letting it drop. The chain and hook I used was something I got at work, intended as a door hold back on big truck cargo bodies that have swinging doors, but you could use any suitable hook and piece of chain

The wire that is provided to hold the pin easily slides off and the pin can be lost.
I need a good way to retain the clip to the wire so it won't fall off when I pull it out.
I have never had a problem with the pin that locks the jack in place, however and that clip is a good safety anyway.

I've never had a problem with any of it, but Gordon got me thinking after he had a problem, so I decided to add a little extra security.

Yes I have had the wire slide off many times when pulling the pin.
The new pin in my photo above was 3 for $1.50 (US)... so I just carry spares in my toolbox.
