What is that thing?

What with all the talk of towing this with that and such, I recall the movie "The Long, Long Trailer" with Lucy and Desi.
Remember after they buy the trailer, their little car can't pull it and they upgrade to a Mercury (convertible, no less), but then they still have a little thing with wheels between the car and the trailer. Apparently, the tongue weight was too much for the car. I wonder if those things are still available and what they are called, dolly? bogie?

There is a company called Trailer Toad that makes them.

I see they aim to sell to motorhomes to prevent the stresses on the frame, but why wouldn't it work for regular towing, like your car which can handle the weight, but not the tongue weight?

I saw some sort of dollie under a fifth wheel RV in an RV park recently. Real heavy duty looking unit that looked like it could handle the weight of the trailer just fine and at the same time eliminate the tongue weight from the tow vehicle. I did look like backing up might be a little tricky.

Looks pretty much like the same tow connection idea that semi's use for doubles although they have a wide track footprint.
