Wheel offset - would .5" positive offset work on 16' Scamp?

Hi All,

We have ordered a new axle for our 1986ish 16' Scamp. The new axle requires 5-bolt wheels. We'd like to order the 13" x 4 1/2", 5 on 4.5 "Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel" in order to use baby moon hubcaps.

I know the original wheels have a zero offset. If I understand correctly, the positive offset means the rear of the wheel will be 1/2" closer to the center of the trailer, correct? Has anyone installed wheels like these? Would the 1/2" positive offset of these wheels present any issues with mounting?

Thanks!

The positive offset moves the wheel in wards to the center of the trailer There will be more clearance between the outside wheel well and less on the back side.

Since the mounting of the wheel is no longer on center when looking at the wheel with the hubcap on, the depth of the wheel will appear less deep. if one was to use a hubcap with a spinner on the end that would make the spinner stick out more from the tire. A half inch is not allot to worry about and when ordering the axle you could make it longer to make up the difference if you wanted to. But you would always use an offset wheel. Make sure you buy an extra wheel for your spare tire.

Check the "section width" of the tire that you will use to see how it will effect the overall offset in the wheel well. likely no problem.

Thanks for the quick responses!

We ordered Maxxis ST175/80R13 tires so the width should be very similar. I looked when I got home from work tonight. There's plenty of room for the wheels/tires to move inboard as well, so hopefully there will not be any issues.

Thanks again!

Dave, don't forget to figure the clearance between the wheel/tire and the dogleg control arm.

Great point! Yes -- I just checked. There is about 2" of clearance there, so all is good. Thanks!

Why not step-up to a larger dia. Wheel? Less rolling resistance, smoother ride, longer tire life, 13" are harder to find in lower east nowhere!!

I had seriously considered that. I was worried about adding any extra height though, so stayed with the 13's.
