I can vouch for the Camp Hale CG, where I stayed last weekend. The sites are spacious and the view from the group site is inspiring. The CG host is friendly and good-humored, if a bit scatterbrained. Be forewarned that there's no water available in camp. According to Ken, the host, the CG water system was abandoned after a train wreck spilled hazardous material within the watershed. It was cheaper to close off the wells than to continually test the water for purity. That's too bad, and it caught us by surprise, since we travel with minimum water to save
weight. But Leadville's only 10 miles away, and it's always worth a visit to see a Colorado mountain town untainted by ski areas, golf courses or other modern redevelopments.
We'll be away that week at a sultry
East Coach beach-- wish I could be at the meet instead.
