Camping in Colorado

Several folks inquired as to where my Egg in Shade photos were taken -- At the South Mineral Campground of the San Juan NF near Silverton CO. Here's a shot of the road in:<img src=http://www.fiberglassrv.com/board/uploads/3f467ddca6056COSOMI~1.JPG/>

And here's one of the Egg in Shade<img src=http://www.fiberglassrv.com/board/uploads/3f467e1561a9fSHADE05.JPG/>

South Mineral Campground

You get there by going about two miles north of Silverton (from jct of US 550 & CO 110) on 550, turning roughly west (left) on SanJuan County 7 (marked by NF Access signs). SM CG is about four miles up the gravel road pictured above.

Here are some more views in and around the So Mineral CG, which has about two dozen sites, all with picnic table. Water, vault toilets, fire pits (allowed even in fireban times) and garbage are there, plus the hosts sell firewood, but no dump or electric. Just about every site is accessible by egg-sized trailers, but bulgemobiles have only a few and big bulgemobiles can't make it around the turns. Several sites are creek-side and most have shade.

Dispersed camping near So Min CG

On the road into the SM CG, you pass three officially-marked dispersed or 'overflow' areas where free camping (except in fireban time, when $ are collected, prolly to pay for enforcement of no fires [no official CG = no approved fire pits = no fires]) is allowed. Two of the areas are large, cobbled/graveled creekside flats between the creek and road, where bulgemobiles easily fit and have vault toilets. No other services, so they must be obtained in Silverton. Not much shade unless you are lucky enuf to get under the few trees.

The third area is smaller and has some sites suitable for bulgemobiles and a few where egg-sized trailers or tents will fit. It is located between the other two, at the only bridge on the road, on both sides of the Middle Fork of Mineral Creek. No services whatsoever, not even a smooth road ( bent my bumper on a tree root at one spot).

Here's a shot of my current campsite:
