On my way to Bandon for the gathering in July I stayed at an RV park - Hiouchi - just 4 miles north and 5 miles east of Crescent City. It was a large beautiful grassy site with hookups. I don't think it was too expensive considering State Parks are probably $30 now. One of the state parks was adjacent to this RV park.
That would be Jedediah Smith State Park on the Smith River on highway 199 east of Crescent City about 1/2 hour. Just far enough from the coast to escape the fog. Beautiful place, camp sites surrounded by trees or shubbery, fairly private, nicde swimming beach, fishing.

Ellen, someone mentioned Boise Creek which is a USFS campground, (I'm sure the USFS campground will be cheaper than the CA state parks), no hookups but there is water and also bathrooms. Close to the Trinity River and fishing, swimming, rafting, Bigfoot, Hoopa casino, beautiful weather. Fall preferably 'cause of the heat during the summer. Nice campground, easy access, one hour east of Eureka and two hours west of Redding, not too crowded also has a host during the season. Campground gate locked during off season. Never seems to be too crowded. Might be able to work with the Ranger at the Lower Trinity Ranger Station in Willow Creek. Probably has 20-30 camping spots (just a guess about that).

Marg -

The ONLY issue I would have is the policy of no reservations. It is only $10 a night, BUT there are only 17 spots.
If the USFS would be willing to do some sort of reservation for a group, then I think it could work. Without a reserved spot, though, my [b]personal opinion is that it would not work for a gathering. But, then, I am always willing to do whatever the "group" wants.

Hi Earl:

Please, count us in. We're excited! All of the three proposed sites seem great. We are familiar with Hendy Woods and think it is great. Very scenic. Centered around the Navarro River. Also, it is close to the Sonoma Coast and Napa and Sonoma wine regions, making it handy for adding other stops on the way to or from the gathering.

There have been no objections to the proposed dates of September 17-19, 2010 for our Northern California Central Valley Get-together. Come early - stay late. So - - put those dates on your calendar.

It appears that the Sacramento Valley folks (and others a little farther away) are leaning towards the Get-together being held at Burney Falls. A final decision can be made on March 1 when reservations can be made.

More discussion?????

We agree to Burney Fall if everyone else does. When I go to the sites, they all seem to be for tents only. Will they let twenty trailers in to the tent sights? Has anyone been there to see where we should center the trailer reservations?

Hi! If you go to www.parks.ca.gov and look at McArthur Burney Falls, you can check out info about the campground and down load a campground map. They do have trailer sites in addition to tent sites.

When you get to the McArthur-Burney Falls website you can download a full page campground map. Reservations are made through Reserve America, and their website shows which sites are RV's and tent only. Most of the sites will take trailers and are 32 feet, back-in's. (I don't think the 32 foot limit will be a problem for any of us!) It appears, when the time comes (March 1), we can request certain sites by number.

I haven't been there in many years so don't know which sites would be best. If I remember right the campground is flat and in a pine forest setting. Perhaps someone who has been there more recently can fill us in. The Rim Camp has RV spaces all around the loop.

I'm so glad to see a thread for a Northern California Get-Together. I've been talking to my husband about organizing one for a couple of years now. We've attended the Oregon Gathering in Bandon for the last 4 years and have had so much fun and would like to see something a little closer to home.

Unless something pops up unexpected, we'd love to attend the gathering at McArthur-Burney Falls next September; sounds like fun!

Burney Falls? I'll go.

Or Hat Creek, or even Manzanita Lake CG in Lassen...

**** UPDATE ****

I tried to call the park, but I suppose the staff has the day off for the Holiday. Maybe they all went camping. Who knows. OR parhaps since office folks go camping on a day off, perhaps THEY all went to the office for the day. Who knows.

THEN - I talked to a nice guy at the "1-800" reservation center... & here is the skinny...

The RESERVATION system is effective thru the weekend of Sept 11th, then the park converts to first come, first served.
I asked if that REALLY meant first come... or if there was any provision for a group reservaton.

He said that I should work directly with park rangers for that...

SO - I will give them a call on Tuesday morning an see what they say - what kind of lead time and so on and so forth they need - including a firm count, etc.

I am actually GLAD that we are outside the formal resevation period and formal reservation system: I think that if the park service staff will work with us it will be much easier to coordinate stuff.

Will update this group after I call tomorrow morning

THANKS TO ALL

Safe Journeys to all and God Bless...

Alan W.

We will be glad to have you with us at Burney Falls. I think it's a neat place to explore.
I see you will be at Bandon in A16. I will be in A35. The Weinel's will also be there - in A40 (I think).

We'll be glad to see you there also.

Michele Weinel has volunteered to be our activities director.

Be sure to see Alan's post - above - about reservations.

Super, Earl, we'll see you at Bandon then! We had such a good time last year - arrived 4 days early and stayed a day after the official event. Very fun and relaxing. Joy puts together a great golfball-horseshoe tournament (or whatever that game is called).

Thank you Ellen,
As of right now I won't be at the Oregon gathering but you never know, things could change.

But I will definitely be at Burney Falls. I haven't looked at the campground map as yet but I recall a nice campground just inside the gate to the right o the falls and it was big enough for campers. Wasn't camping so don't know the campsite setup. And, it was a long long time ago.

It did seem to me that there was another campground around the lake. What lake... I don't remember, the one the river drains into!!!!

I'll wait for Alan research and info.

Since the gathering place and date appears to be firmed up, I've split that information into it's own topic. This topic will be moved to the archives within the next few days.

Don't forget to put this gathering into the Calendar

Let me know if you'd like me to help keep the list of attendees current on the top post
