Maybe Nancy better not schedule any conflicting workshops for this time slot?
Nancy won't. The other workshops will be from 2:00 - 3:00 PM on Saturday. This DO workshop will start around 4:00 PM. That way participants can work on their potluck dish for Saturday evening.

Nancy,

How much time have you alotted for the Dutch Oven Workshop?
What time is the Pot luck?

To put one of these on, we need about 3 hours.
  1. One hour for Teaching Learning, Questions & Answers
  2. A half hour to three-quarter hours for staring fires, charcoal & and food prep.
  3. Three-Quarter hours for cooking and more Q & A.
  4. A half hour slippage (etc.)
As you know, if we were just cooking one dish, BAM it would be done in 45 minutes at the most.

You're right, Mike. I wasn't remembering the 2004 schedule correctly. We had the workshops from 1:00 until 2:00 and then started the DO workshop at 2:30. The potluck is at 6:00 PM.

Mike & Lori,
Wow - we have always wanted to go the DO Cook-off - saw a few clips of it on TV last year! We are just getting started in DO cooking. Nancy gave us some great tips at the North Oregon gathering last fall - just enough to whet our appetitie for more . Would love to join the workshop!
Thanks
Dave & Kathie

If there is still room, we would like to attend it also. Will this be a demonstration only, or will we be cooking also?

Thanks,
Jim and Mary C.

Sorry for the delay, we went away for the weekend to San Antonio Lake, CA. (date weekend). That is in Monterey County. The weather was fabulous.

Sure there is room, glad to have you.

Everyone will be cooking in their own Dutch Oven.

Been around DO cooking for more than 3 score but as a poineer at it, I like just putting it down in the coals of an open fire and forgetting it till dinner.
That, honestly, isn't possible in the campground fire pits today, so will at least be coming by to watch. I don't have a strong affinity for briquets, but love recipes and good food.
I'm sure hoping that July will bring some sunshine! I only remember it a little bit!

Barb,
I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's with charcoal, possable coals from a fire, but much easier using bought charcoal.

Barb, the DO cooking Mike and Lori teach is using the DOs which have legs and a lid with a lip around the edge. People learn to cook outside using charcoal briquettes (under the DO and on top of the lid). It's really fun and you will learn a LOT from Lori and Mike.

Lori and I went to the National Dutch Oven cook off last year put on by the Hubbard Museum and the Smithsonian Institute. For us it was fantastic.

We saw all kinds of dutch oven cooking. None of them were wrong. We have been teaching dutch oven cooking for about thirty years and use techniques that are easy to learn and give good results. We started out teaching Boy Scouts so you can see we needed to make it boy proof.

Lori has gone on to putting on demonstatration at the Pioneer Museum and has taken first place in a Dutch Oven Cook Off. At the wrokshop she will give you the recipe she wouldn’t give our local 5 star restaurant.

There are many, many ways to cook with Dutch Ovens and we love learning and watching others that do it a little different. There are some things we have learned that make it easy and fun both cooking and clean-up. We will share what we know.

Lori teaches three levels of cooking, from very simple just getting started to advanced sour dough bread making & fancy desserts.

It will be fun.

PS: ...and yes we start everyone out using Regular Kingsford Charcoal (NOT match light). (We have cooked many times in the ground or over an open campfires and at Mountainman Rendezvous, that is the way we do it.)

[b]Dutch Oven Workshop

Lori & I have volunteered to put on another Dutch Oven Workshop this year.

Last summer we went to the National Chuck Wagon Cook Off in Ruidoso, New Mexico sponsored by the Hubbard Museum & the Smithsonian Institute.

We had so much fun and the food was great. We have many new ideas. Would you like to help us put it on?
Hi Mike,
I hope I am doing this right. I definately want to be in your dutch oven workshop.
We are traveling in our trailer right now, currently in Boston. Contact with internet is not always good. Please save me a spot in the workshop.
