Low rider, unless that wheel is down in the mud.

That is a low price, but I have to laugh at the "good condition." What would "fair condition" (or something else less than "good") look like, one wonders.

It does show a "square" jalousie window in the door and the Scamp logos though. So chalk one up for April's trailer and the mystery trailer from last week (gold stripe) being Scamps.

That big AC on the top looks like trouble, unless he has some extra bracing on the inside. Also that axle is SHOT.

I am so glad I found this forum! I was thinking I might want to consider this trailer (even though it's not a Burro or Uhaul) because of the price. I wouldn't have known about the AC overload! And how can you tell that the axle is shot? Inquiring minds need to know!!

There are specific tests you can do if you are at the trailer (bouncing up and down inside while someone looks at the axle; measuring clearance between tire and floor), but I think Kevin is just looking at what a "low rider" this trailer looks to be. Of course the tire looks flat, but even still...

Although, to be fair to an older trailer where the axle is still acceptable (probably not the trailer in question, but others), I don't think they're ever as high as Kevin's new axle.

But.. maybe I'm wrong? Kevin, is that axle exactly to the specs of the one that came on the trailer? Or is it somehow angled or etc. for a bit more lift?

Raya

PS:> And by the way, Kevin has another mid-80s Scamp with the "square," jalousie window. Suddenly they're coming out in droves!

I only have 1 Scamp. Also my trailer is a little higher than most.

Hi,
The early Scamps have that appearance of a bad axle. This is the Scamp I sold last year fully restored, and the axle was just fine. There is still about 4" clearance to the upper body. Check out the photos. Front & Back.
This was a 1976.

P.S. I tried to delete my duplicate photo under "Manage Current Attachments" with no luck! Plus I asked for help from Donna D. with "ZERO" response and no action. I tried!!!!!!!

Kevin I believe "another" was referring to another trailer on this board.

There was a discussion on the square jailhouse door window in this thread trying to determine the make of an unbadged trailer which had a square door window. Apparently the square window seems to be only on the 1983 and 1984 Scamps. Sometime before that it was a smaller rectangular window, sometime after the radius corners started appearing.

Without you copying and posting the pictures from the various ads, we would not know that. Thank you for your efforts, I now look to the "referrals" to see the differences between trailers.

Edited to add link

Anne,

If you look at this sales brochure in the documents section you will see that the center of the wheel is just about even or slightly below the level of the body at the door on a new trailer. The body looks lower with old axles in need of replacement, i.e. the body settles down as the rubber in the axle distorts over the years. There are lots of discussions in the forums about checking an axle.

If you are new to these trailers, you should also note that the body is made to come lower on the door side by a few inches to allow for the lowered floor in the kitchen area.
