If the welding is any good that is a good deal. It already seems to have a new axle on it which has got to be worth $500.

Steel vs. Aluminum: Cost Comparison
I doubt that aluminum frame is light enough to significantly offset the raw material cost difference. ($.35/lb. for steel vs. $1.50/lb. for aluminum).

Whenever I hear "aluminum" frame I think of Gina D. and the trials she went through to get the one for her 13' Burro properly repaired. Murphy's Law always strikes at the least opportune time.... like a frame break out in the middle-of-no-where and all the convenient welders don't know how to weld aluminum....

Good point Donna. I just welded my new back bumper on my trailer this morning. If it was Alum I would have been out of luck.

I used to pull a lot of Aluminum flatbeds, we hauled more weight on them but they required a lot of maintenance.

U-Haul VT-16 aluminum bumpers just bolt onto the steel frame. I'm not sure what the 13s have.

What does it cost to have a frame hot galvanized? Corrosion resistance would seem to be one of the big benefits. Maybe you could carry around one of those big mirrors, like at the Concours car shows to show off your frame?

Regards,

Matt
