We are former fulltime RVers and still "snowbirds", now with a new manufactured home in Coaldale, Alberta, as our summer residence and our 36 ft. HitchHiker 5W parked year round in Mission, Texas, for our winter home. We purchased this Casita for our annual north-south-north migrations and occasional short term touring. However after so many years in large TTs and 5Ws we found that, with one owner who is 6’3” & nearly 300lbs plus “Camper” the cat with her kennel and enclosed litter box, even with the extensive upgrades we made to make the Casita more comfortable, it is just a little too confining. We have now purchased a 25 ft. Ever-Lite to replace it so our loss is the next owners gain.

As with most 17LD buyers we chose this model for the option of having a twin beds layout. We studied a number of twin bed modifications in 17LDs and found most using wider mattresses for seating had no back support and/or the leg room between the seats was too narrow. These problems are also inherent in the new Independence model which is, for all intents and purposes, simply a modified Liberty.

With these problems in mind we came up with our own design that would still provide the original seating dimensions for 2 while retaining the original leg room and still have wider and more comfortable mattresses for sleeping. We did this by extending the front edge of the seats by 7 inches and hinging the short extension sections that are the same length as the short seat cushions (closest to the galley) and hinging their supports to fold flush with the face of the fiberglass seat.

This allows the short section of the 2 piece custom mattresses to be flipped over onto the long section and the short seat extension sections to be dropped down when inserting the original short seat and backrest cushions. While this does limit seating to 2 persons, the Casita is, after all a 2 person camper. An added bonus is that, in this configuration, these seats become virtual tub chairs using the double thickness of the mattress for an armrest, computer platform or multiple other uses while sitting.
