Hi all,

This was going to be mine. I caught the posting just after he put it up and saw it on Saturday. It's a '96 and I have a written purchase agreement, but the owner supposedly "registered" it PTI a year-and-a-half ago and does NOT have title in hand. He went to the DMV this morning and pointed out that one could purchase the title, for $17, but didn't do it himself? Find it highly unlikely that anyone who purchases it will be able to obtain a title, either. Reeeally wanted this, but not sure of the legality of this purchase. What's really frustrating is that I'm a paralegal and his wife is an attorney, so you'd think we'd manage a fair transaction, but CA DMV is one frustrating entity. (See latest CA PTI registration thread.) Not sure I want to go any further with it... Thanks for letting me vent.

Emi, things happen for a reason. If this wasn't meant to be it means something else (and maybe better) is coming along.

Best of luck.

Hi Emi;
I too made contact with the seller. Wanted to see pictures and were told that the trailer was available without picture for $6.500 but if he had to post pictures the trailer would be $7,000.

As Donna said ...... never mind there will be a trailer for us in the future ... just give it time.
Take care
Marianne

Just wanted to add a postcursor, as he is aware of this Board and want you all to know this. He's even indicated, vehemently, that this is part of the reason he will no longer deal with me, after reluctantly putting forth his "good faith" effort at his local DMV, twice.

I'm sorry, his instincts were right, I am "good" people, and extremely spiritually aware, just not aware of any "Californian" who will put up a large item for sale without title in hand, as I have purchased used vehicles and other large items this way for years... I put forth three "good faith attempts," signing a sales contract, giving him a personal deposit check, offering a cashier's check when the banks opened on Monday, and to pick up the trailer the same day, so he wouldn't have to transport/store it. My friend even offered him a cashier's check, after he treated me like a stubborn child over the phone, because he had to purchase and wait for his own $17 title. I'm only extremely cautious about purchasing a large item that someone else might own and want no hard feelings.

Emi, I'm sure he is frustrated with trying to sell his trailer without a title. With all the trailer selling scams that happen it is a good idea to be cautious if things aren't standard. Been there and done that and it was a nightmare even tho it ended up working in my favor. I will never again buy a trailer without a title unless the seller goes to the DMV with me.

I really don't know why a new title couldn't be issued for the trailer. All that would have to be done is have the VIN verified. Maybe that to hard for the people who work at the DMV?
