SOLD Adorable 13’ Restored 1985 Vintage Scamp Fiberglass Travel Trailer - $15,000 OBO

For your consideration is a truly one of a kind example of the increasingly rare 13-foot 1985 Scamp travel trailer. We call her Marshmallow, and have invested over $19,000 in her restoration to date.

The original trailer was completely gutted in 2014, and over the course of four months, all windows were removed, interior and exterior were sanded down to bare fiberglass, imperfections were repaired with new fiberglass, and new gelcoat was applied to the exterior and interior. The exterior was polished to a spectacular shine, and the interior now has smooth white gelcoat walls instead of the original elephant skin and rat fur. Supports for integrated LED lighting and custom curtains were glassed into the walls. All major systems (electrical, water, propane) were overhauled in the restoration. We have receipts and photo documentation of the major steps throughout the process.

BODY
  • Gelcoat and exterior/interior restoration performed by Calibre Boat Repair in Denver: $13,000
  • New plexiglass rear window and seals: $55
  • New Fiamma 45S 8-foot (green striped fabric) awning with custom wood interior support structure: $1075
  • New door built from original 1985 mold from Scamp with matching gelcoat and new window: $535
  • New door hardware including hinges, lock, drip cap, and seals: $100
  • Original front and side windows installed with new seals.
  • New front window gravel shield with matching gelcoat: $85
  • New ultrabright school bus LED tail lights: $75
  • Polished belly band
  • Resealed roof vent with new hardware (new hardware not pictured)
  • New J&R locking water fill station with city water hookup and tank fill inlet: $50
  • Water tank moved from rear passenger side to middle front for better weight distribution
  • New exterior cord port cover: $8
  • New refrigerator vents: $60
  • Tires: Nankang trailer specific tires with plenty of tread remaining

FRAME
  • Reinforced heavy-duty trailer tongue
  • New Lund locking powder coated steel tongue box: $192
  • New Worthington 11-lb propane tank (full): $60
  • New rubber propane lines installed under frame: $150
  • New custom welded spare tire rack with new spare trailer tire
  • Integrated telescoping stabilizing jacks
  • New license plate mounting bracket on rear bumper

INTERIOR
  • New NuTeak synthetic wood deck flooring in cherry color (waterproof, lightweight, ultra durable, non-fading, scratch resistant)
  • New custom handmade bubinga veneer table with original hardware (made by phenomenal local woodworker)
  • New matching gelcoat on original fiberglass benches
  • New foam cushions with new custom charcoal herringbone pattern wool upholstery
  • New custom closet with storage bins and 2 retractable coat/hat hooks
  • New custom front bench/bed cabinet
  • New custom sewn, white linen curtains with matching snapping tie-backs (on unique cable curtain rods)
  • 12-gallon water tank (transferred to underneath front bench)
  • New water pump and water lines (controlled by switch under countertop)
  • New Dometic 3-way propane refrigerator with painted overlay door (Refrigerator installed with fully insulated and sealed surrounding). Never used: $540
  • New Inteli-Power PD9130 30 amps, 500 watts power inverter: $234
  • New Prostart Marine Deep Cycle Battery (never used): $107
  • New custom MDF cabinet: $500
  • New custom laser-cut beech wood butcher block countertop: $300
  • New stainless steel, undermounted bar sink (drains to ground- no grey water tank): $186
  • New LED reading lights (nice warm yellow light): $165
  • New Moen nickel kitchen faucet: $100
  • Original 2-burner stove-top

ACCESSORIES
  • Five custom Pendleton wool pillows (upholstered using genuine Pendleton trade blanket)
  • Fiamma awning extension tool, guylines, and stakes
  • Original side window screens (not installed)
  • Heavy duty jack stands (x2)
  • Parking chocks (x2)
  • Electric space heater (for use when hooked up to shore power)
  • Silverware tray
  • Container Store wire baskets in closet
  • New camper-specific fire extinguisher, CO detector, and fire alarm
  • Spare interior paint
  • (Binoculars and mugs not included)

This trailer is 30 years old and although it is in fantastic condition, there are some small imperfections worth noting that would need to be addressed to make this near-perfect.
  • There is some minor fiberglass slumping that needs to be addressed in order to improve the sealing at the bottom of the door (a common problem with Scamp trailers of this era).
  • Small cracks in hubcaps (see photos)
  • Some cosmetic surface rust on frame
  • Small abrasion in the ceiling vent screen
  • Original side windows have some separation of the weather stripping surrounding glass, which is purely cosmetic (see photos). Previous owners applied silicone sealant around window edges. They do not leak. These windows do not have a locking mechanism; therefore we have used dowels to keep the windows “locked” on the inside when not in use.

This little trailer tows like a dream with at least a compact SUV or station wagon and although the 13’ Scamp does not come with brakes, it is so light that it doesn’t seem to need them. Since the renovation, we have driven it on trips from Colorado to Jackson, WY and the California Sierras without any problems. She is steady at all speeds including on the interstate. The interior is easy to clean (smooth gel coat walls and NuTeak flooring wipe clean). You can see some photos from our adventures on our Instagram account @MarshmallowScamp.

These trailers are increasingly rare to find and this one is definitely a head turner. Although she’s in excellent condition, these fiberglass trailers are a labor of love and require steady maintenance to keep them in ship shape. Marshmallow is no exception.

$15,000 or best offer. Only serious offers please. Buyer to arrange shipping or pickup from Denver, CO. Colorado title will be transferred at the time of sale. Thanks for looking!

Which model Scamp?

Hello,
Your scamp is beautiful. Does it have a bathroom, or is it the model with the bunk beds that sleeps 4?

Thanks,
Derek

Re: Which model Scamp?

Thank you, Derek! This is the model with bunk beds and no bathroom. In the renovation we removed the supports for the top bunk to make the bottom bed/bench more spacious, so now the trailer sleeps 3 quite comfortably.

Courtney, Great job on your restoration! I'm wondering if you can tell me where I would find an awning for your Scamp. I have a 13', 1981 Burro, virtually the same camper as yours, and would like to put an awning on it. Thanks in advance for your help. Bill

Not of the door side. Just the closet just left of the door, between closet and rear bed.

Hi Linda,

I'm not selling it. I want to find an awning that will fit a 13'. I will be hosting at Cataloochie, GSMNP this coming August for the month as I did last year and would like to have an awning for it. I am also making modifications for a year long trip around the US and Canada beginning in March 2017. Any help with awning information or any other 13' modification that anyone wants to suggest, I'd be very willing to hear it. Thanks.

This trailer had been previously remodeled when we bought it and the overhead storage over the sink (assuming it existed originally) had already been removed. All of the storage in this newly remodeled version is under the benches, in the new kitchen cabinet under the sink and in the new custom closet.

Thank you Linda! We'll be sad to see Marshmallow go, but we're planning some big adventures that will require a camper with more heavy duty off-grid, off-road and extended overland travel capabilities. We wish we could afford to keep her too!

Wonderful renovation. Somebody's going to get a really beautiful trailer. I can see why you'll be sorry to see her go. Good luck on the sale.
