We shopped a lot of trailers and spent this last weekend looking at a 2016 Escape 5.0TA and it just didn't have the bling we thought we'd get for $35k plus. That was when we realized that we were comparing the Escape to this Bigfoot and the decision made itself. The Bigfoot (old school retro version) just seemed like a better product more worthy of the investment.

We've already restored a Scamp and are undaunted by the potential for the work that may be required and really like the whiteness of the inside that these old trailers provide. The light colored walls and cabinets make everything seem more open and brighter and the bigger windows let more light in too.

We shopped a lot of stickies as well and most are simply too dark. Someone told those manufacturers that their customers like dark wood. I guess it makes some people feel warm and rich and sumptuous. It just makes us feel closed in and claustrophobic. We love the EggCamper's whiteness and simplicity that some people think is sterile and cold.

Plus, we get to save another classic from the bone yard and personalize it in ways that the new manufacturers won't allow. This is a huge adventure and I love change, so, it's a win-win all around for us.

Can you say, "ROAD TRIP!"

Bill,

I sure like what you posted here.

You are evidently a cheerful soul and are going to make a great neighbor here. How soon can you arrive? I have got a "to-do" list that's a mile long...

More seriously, there was a Bigfoot (?) fifth wheel from the late 80's (?) that broke my heart a few months back. It had a pair of captain's chairs set cozy-crowded on one side of the living room. We loved it.

We don't have a pickup truck, but that trailer had one mightily appealing layout. And, like you say, you get to make it your own and rescue it from the bone yard.

I even investigated what it would take to rent storage until I could pull off the rehab work but RV storage was crazy-expensive locally.

One of my fears when I went to the dark side and looked at new conventionally-built trailers like the Lance 1475 a while back was that I wouldn't be able to work on it as all the wiring and plumbing is laminated inside of the walls. There's no access to add and change things.

Eventually we gave up on finding captain's chairs and ordered an Escape 21 with a U-dinette.

I should really add, we ultimately went with ordering a new trailer here because Momma wants the trailer to be usable sometime within the next seven years. While I do quality work, my progress often tends to be glacial. But, if I'm good, she'll let me do some modifications on the new one.

So, I hear you on the difference between old and new. I anticipate that it will work out great for you guys and hope we will get to see postings as you work on it!

Civilguy,

Interestingly enough, we were talking about ordering an Escape 21 late into the night, last night, and while the expense is high, the desire to get out and camp was higher. We were enchanted with the quality of Escape and have spent three years of shopping to the point of having our build sheet completed. Finally, we took the trip to look at a 2016 5.0TA to find out it just wasn't what we expected and didn't suit our style. It became clear that we were trying to compromise while comparing everything to the Bigfoot that we've selected.

Now we're building to-do lists and I'll be getting my application for a passport expedited so I can drive to Canada. We're excited about the the future, and even though Bobby's camper wasn't destined for the bone yard, we feel extremely fortunate to be the benefactors of a Bigfoot classic and we're looking to the future for new cushion fabrics and paint chips.

Once we get the new trailer home we'll complete an assessment of the general condition and expand our to-do list for things that may need attention. We're gonna' have so much fun! Thank you for your kind comment.
