I developed an interest in bird watching years before we got our Boler. I like to think of myself as a "professional" amateur – but the more I watch birds the more I realize how little I really know! My dream is to haul the Boler around Canada and the US just to see what kinds of birds live where. But for that I need time. And for time I need to retire. And to retire I need money......... sigh.

Dianne,
We just got back from a 5,000 mile round trip to the Texas Gulf Coast - 100% for the birds .
We counted over 210 species and 92 life firsts. Visited refuges from the Louisiana border to Brownsville (Mexican Border) and then some on the Rio Grande on the way home (CA). We caught the end of the winter migration - the last 4 Whooping Cranes to hang around, and the beginning of the Spring migration - lots of song birds falling out of the sky. High Island and Goose Island (Great state park - water & electricity for $20 a night) were the best we found for birds with Sabine Woods a close second. South Padre Island would have been better a little later.
We were gone 3 weeks total, 4 days in Phoenix going to baseball games. The trip could have been done in 2 weeks - not as relaxing as could be but within the realm of vacation...
Go for it when and where you can, time and $ permitting.

The Steller's Jay:
This jay just showed up at our campsite at the Silver Falls OR NOG in April. I am not an enthusiast in the sense of planning a trip just to see birds, but do appreciate the birds that we come across.

Bullock's Oriole and Redwing Blackbird
We saw these beautiful birds while camping at Haynes Point Provincial Park in Osoyoos BC.

I thought watching birds was a frustrating enough past-time, but photographing them! That takes patience. And talent. Lots of neat pictures here. Thanks for sharing.
Tom - the trip you describe is exactly the sort of thing I would like to do. Soon I hope. Right now I struggle to find the time to go out on a Sunday morning for a couple of hours. Too sad.

Dianne:
The key to photographing birds is [b]patience, a good telephoto lens, a tripod, and willingness to be there when the birds are there. The Bullock's Oriole was in the wetland in the evening as the light was fading, the Redwing Blackbird was there early in the morning in the rain. The song sparrow below was singing away in the rain with the sky behind him, so I had to compensate for the backlight. My zoom lens is a 35 - 210 mm Tamron and my camera a Pentax istDS. I was pushing the limits of both camera and lens, which I suppose could provide justification for some new camera equipment!

I take this little Minolta Z1, 3.2 digital camera when I'm canoeing and don't want to take a chance on dunking my good Canon. About 8X10 is the largest I can print without losing much resolution. It has a 10 power optical lens and is as easy to use as a point and shoot.

I was at a window in the house shooting birds in flight approaching our feeders when this happened! Reality bites, for sure.

Bird Photography Alaska Trip
Got back a few weeks ago from my first long trip with my new 16 ft. Scamp. I drove to Alaska then north on the Dalton Highway to Coldfoot and on to Deadhorse. My main focus was birding and bird photography, I put up some photos at the link:

I'm recently retired and plan to do lot more of this!

Even a couple of hours is worth it - we walked this morning for an hour and a half and saw over 30 species. There are places all over - birds have wings and you find them everywhere!
Think of where you can sit or walk for a bit after a 15 drive.
