First try at Carved Bear
We had some big pines cut down and I asked tree men to leave this trunk 5 foot tall.
Carved this bear with the only chain saw I had, a 20 inch Johnsered Turbo that weighs about 30 lbs. Got to tell you I was some sore after carving it over the course of 2 days.
Kept on saying, What the Heck if it doesn't come out I will just cut it off/

Great job!
My dad was a woodcarver but he usually just roughed out with the chain saw and then finished with chisels.

It has been said that a sculpture is already in the medium, it just takes a talented artist to reveal it!
Great job!
In this case, if I tried it... I would surely be "STUMPED"

Nice Job!
Wow, very nice carving job, Gerry. Looks like a sweet bear to me. I always wanted to carve a bear, or buy one that a carver made!

Thanks
Thanks to all. I should have stood by it to show that it is life size, for a Maine Black Bear, at 5 feet tall. There was another tree I took down in the front, but it was in the middle of the drive so I had that stump dug out.
I can figure out how to carve, now I need to master how to put pictures in a post right side up.

LOL picture orientation!
He's super. I love that he's sitting on a proper stump.

Excellent job! Using a chainsaw alone---you really did a fabulous job. Imagine what some chisels woud accomplish!!

That stump is the actual tree its carved out of and as far as chisel work... Paul Bunyon I may be but I'm no Rodan. and besides it would have taken alot longer I think to chisel it all out it being so big.

Hi, Gerry,
that's what I meant about a "proper stump." Something still with roots in the ground. I think that's super cool and a great use of a stump.

I'm impressed! My first carving became instant firewood.
