My 13 foot Burro doing her part to save the Elephants

I am passionate about stopping the slaughter of the awesome African Elephant due to the rise in illegal ivory trade. I hired a local Albuquerque artist, Mr. Melvin Mayes - (I call him A-Mayes-o-Matic) to paint his interpretation of an African Elephant on the sides of my Burro.

It's not complete yet, he has to finish details and paint a red orange sky and finish the grass and add some birds but she should be ready to roll by June when I plan on going to Yellowstone! I'll post final pictures when she's all finished.

I need help naming my burro! Any suggestions? She's a girl, BTW!

I'm missing something. In what way does painting the Burro help save elephants?

Well, maybe if it caused someone to ask about it, the owner could give them info on the World Wildlife Fund or some other cause that is trying to save them?

Directly, nothing. But it will start conversations, which I believe is the intention.

Just a thought… how about a message and website in the back window? People will notice the trailer in many situations where you won't be in a place to have the conversation, like bouncing down the highway or parked somewhere.

BTW- love it!

This is spectacular! I suggest "Tuffi" who was the elephant who famously fell out of the Wuppertal Schwebebahn into the canal below (only minor scratches!). She made a real splash (har har) as a celebrity elephant.

How about "Tembe" - in recognition of Tembe National Elephant Park, located in Tongaland on the elephant coast between Zululand, South Africa and Mozambique. Tembe has the largest African elephants in the world and the herd of 200+ "tuskers" are free roaming, and protected. check out their web site and see the web cam of these gentle giants:

Wink Two suggestion and a question

What is going to be painted on the front and back of the trailer?

Paint a mouse in the grass.

Call her "Dumbo."

PS: Seattle Zoo just sent her elephants away. Caused a big flap.

I lived in Tanganyika ( now Tanzania ) for three years, on the shoulder of Kilimanjaro, and I've lived in a suburb of Chicago.
I've watched several documentaries on elephants, and I still fail to see how painting a trailer with the image of an elephant will "save the elephants".
Before you do that, you might want to consider what you can do, where you live, to save what is around you.
There are poor farmers in Africa, trying to earn a living growing a crop of maize. And then having the US government subsidize corn growers in Nebraska, and then shipping and selling that grain in Africa, below cost, and for less than it costs him to grow the same crop, while having elephants trample his fields...he probably doesn't find elephants cute.

And please. Don't climb Kilimanjaro for cancer, alzheimer's or some other cause. Donate the money you would have spent on the flight, hotel, food, etc. to an agency that you have investigated and determined will spend the money wisely.

We had well-meaning people in Canada send us containers of used clothing, mostly ties that were no longer in style, and then the mission had to pay import duties.

If you want to do something, send money.

Glenn while you have some valid points, I have seen many of your posts around the forums and I have to say you are a very negative person. Rarely a nice word to say about anything or anyone.

Good for you, John. I know you have done much more than paint your trailer. I expect you will get many inquiries and maybe you have a flyer or card or some address on the trailer regarding this. Perhaps you have some organizations that you recommend helping.

Here are the finished product pics!

Great suggestions everyone!

It's already started lots of debate here locally and done much to raise awareness. Some local school kids stopped by and asked questions, many of them didn't know that elephants are still being killed by trophy hunters and ivory poachers.

My mission is to raise awareness to do my part to help them and it's already working!
I loved all the names! I am still debating.......keep them coming!
I included a few interior shots in case anyone is interested, there's nothing special going on in the inside.

I'll be in Yellowstone camping the last week in June! Come visit!

You now have the biggest little FG egg in the nation! It should start plenty of conversations. Take lots of handouts with you.
