I appreciate every single photo I see here on FiberglassRV. I take pics not photos. I don't even recognize there's a bad background behind the pics I take. But, love the wonderful photographs folks take. These enrich my life. Thanks for sharing!

Geese are on the move..

Actually total fabrication. I used a pic of geese and one of my moon pics to make this total fake image.. (-:}

My last camping trip was back in September...camping plans got put on hold for a super busy work travel schedule in october, and then I jumped into a really time consuming marathon training schedule in november, and then broke my leg...

Anyway, in september I went for a 4 day weekend to Elk State Forest near Benezette Pennsylvania for the elk rut. Pennsylvania has a modest sized elk herd sprawled out over a couple of counties in this north central-west part of the state. All the elk today are descendants of a group of about [I want to say] 40 reintroduced rocky mountain elk that were released a hundred years ago. Our native eastern elk were 100% exterminated by sometime in the 19th century, I think.

Because the elk are hunted only in very limited numbers they are basically tame and easy to view. September is the rut when they all lose their minds and the bulls run around bugling and the cows make adorable squeaking noises. There are a few areas just north of the town of Benezette where they gather daily in large numbers and it's quite a show. Literally, it is a show - hundreds of tourists come to see the spectacle.

The crowds make it not my usual preferred sense of isolation and quietude while doing wildlife photography but it was okay since the animals obviously did not care. If anybody is near the area during September I highly recommend, but make your camping reservations well in advance!

Here's my favorite shot from the 4 days. (for some reason the colors are reading a little green-heavy in my view but you get the idea)

Thanks Diane. Glacier is so beautiful, I could have used a pinhole camera to get a great shot.

Hi: Brian Van Snell... It was great to meet up with you at The Escape Rally at NK' MIP Campground in Osoyoos. Caught this sunset one evening there.

Sunset

Carol and Alf:

Thanks. I think this might have been the same sunset on June 4.

Wonderful photo! Can you tell me the details of the camera, lens and teleconverter you used and the settings?

Brian, I cheat. I have an old manual focus 600m F4 lens and use a Nikon 201 2X TC on a Nikon D800E. Lens is an oldie but still a good one. I shoot the moon a few stops under exposed so I can increase contrast a bit without blowing out the highlights, then get it where I want with levels. This was shot at F16 (f8 on the lens), ISO 125 and 1/160 sec.

I also use Live view zoomed all the way in for focusing and I refocus between each shot (about 20 shots). It seems out of a handful of shots, one or two will always be sharper than the rest.
