Sign Carving
I've always been something of a wood worker / wood carver and having seen others identify their campsite with a sign of some kind or other, I thought I'd try my hand at it. This is the one I came up with for our teardrop with the logo of the NY chapter of the Tearjerkers. Although this is on pine, I prefer using poplar as I can get it without knots and it's a little more forgiving of a slip of the chisel. I paint in the carved designs with acrylic paint and cover with several coats of polyurethane.
Next I'll be working on a design for our new ParkLiner. It is all hand work using a mallet, a variety of carving tools, straight chisels and even a few old scalpels. I guess I need to put together a tool roll and a couple of wood clamps so I can leave a trail of wood chips wherever our travels take us.

Brian: you probably saw our sign last year at Fish Creek, if not we'll be on site 238 again this year. Woodworking is not really my thing so I paid to have ours machine carved, along with a couple inlaid signs on the teardrop. See you there.

That is a nice piece of work. I tried woodcarving many years ago but lacked the artistry and the patience. However I had taken a drafting course in high school and was a decent printer and I could handle a craftsman router pretty well. I made one routed sign with notched ends, stained it and gave it a few coats of polyurethane. We had a local rv trailer sales place in town and I went over there with it and convinced him he needed to give one of these signs to his customers who bought travel trailers. I made 2 sizes, one single line similar to yours, and a double liner that generally had mom and pops Family name on the top line, had a travel trailer routed on one end and of course the kiddies or pets names on the bottom line. I'd like to say it turned into a multi million dollar business but it did give us some extra spending money.

If I'm thinking of the right Mary, we won your quilted loon wall hanging in the gift exchange last year. We'll be up the road in 258 - watch for the sign!

I'd love to supplement my income like that but I don't think anyone would wait that long. I just finished a sign for our church fellowship hall and it only took a month and a half. Arthritis pretty much limits carving to an hour or so a day before the fingers give out. And, if I charged even minimum wage, no one could afford me.
Thanks for the complement, though...

Looks really nice. My dad was a woodcarver/woodworker (one of his hobbies, second to fishing.) I know when he did small signs he used some kind of electric tool (sort of like a Dremel) as I did a few of those myself, but he also did a lot of hand work. And he did have to quit carving probably six or seven years before he died. I don't know if that was due to loss of hand strength or dexterity. He'd have been about 70 when he stopped carving.

And we have a wonderful stained glass piece that hangs in our kitchen. Is that quilt thing why you bought a Scotty. And we have one in our Uhaul that looks like a fiberglass trailer.

New Campsite Sign for ParkLiner
Just finished the layout for a new campsite sign for our ParkLiner. Props to Accrete for producing the hull number/logo graphic! Now, it's time to sharpen the chisels and make the wood chips fly!
And yes, my brain is organized pretty much like my workshop!

Thanks Deryk,
Arthritis is the limiting factor. I'm good for a couple of hours and then have to call it quits. I did manage the 034 today. At this rate it should only take a month or so.

New sign, carved and painted. Just needs a couple coats of spar varnish and figure out how I want to mount it and I'll be good to go.
