1980 Scamp 16

Driving home with our Scamp. It's a 1980 16' that in for a fun time with our family of little boys. Can't wait to get home and show them. Let the adventures began.
Everything "appears" to be working, just old. The only random, visible thing is the AC unit in the center of the closet. That means the PO (not the seller we bought it from) cut a dumb hole for it right by he door. I wish we could take it out, fix the fiberglass and set up the AC in a better spot or not even at all. Suggestions?
How about the outside shell being powdery not glossy? Anyone ever come across this?
Thanks and we'll keep you posted on its progress!

We just got a '79 Scamp, outside was chalkie. Lisa scrubed it with Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser and buffed it with 3M Marine Restorer wax and it looks like new!

Have lots of fun with your new "toy"

Wecome!

....to the friendliest group of fiberglass owners you'd ever want to know! Inside photos are needed, and I think those tie dye curtains are super groovy (really!!).

Looks great! Don't know for sure about your model or your camper but Scamp did mount AC in the closet in some models.

+1 vote for Barkeepers friend as a good cleaner to get a Scamp clean and bright.

Welcome your new trailer looks great. The AC may actually have been installed by the factory in that location as they put them in the bottom portion of the tall closet by the door for years.

I also give a big thumbs up with using the 3M Restore & Wax to take the powder type finish off the gelcoat its common on boats as well as fiberglass trailers that have been left to sit out in the elements with no wax on them for a long time. The 3M products will shine it right up.

1980 scamp reno

Thanks for the info. We are well underway on the renovation. The AC smack dab in the middle of the closet. Definitely an after market thought. That's ok. We've been scrubbing it down the ensolite with the La Awesome cleaner. Works like a charm. Pulled the carpet out yesterday and have great sub-floor underneath. Yay! Pictures to come soon.

For a while Scamp was installing A/Cs in the bottom of the closet but later started installing them on the roof. What you have may be an orig. install. (need pictures) A closet A/C in an older Scamp is not a big deal unless it was done badly. If the hole is not too big Tempress makes a hatch that will fit a scamp closet for outside access.

My 91 Scamp 16ft has the air below the closet, it's a factory install. My shell is powered as well, it's been mentioned to me to use a product they sell at Lowes, Zep wax if I remember correctly.

Thanks everybody. Even though it's oddly situated, the AC works wonderfully. I think we'll work around the aesthetics and keep it for now. Next is: scrubbing this bad boy down, caulking, priming and painting. Then hubby wants to put some simple countertops on the counter space. Wish us luck!
