Axle replacement time

Hi Folks,
I just joined but have been lurking for some time.
I bought a 1974 13' Trillium that is overdue for a new axle.
I started undoing the 4 bolts connecting to body to the frame yesterday.
I also have 14" Tires (specified inside the door).
Currently my axle is sitting at 30 degrees up on the good side!
I am looking at going 22 degrees down and would like to know if anyone has done this and what their clearance is. I don't want it to look like a 4x4.
I sold my 1991 Toyota Winnie Warrior this year and I'm trying out the Trillium, hope to have a Florida trip in my near future, cheers, Jorge.

Jorge,

This link will provide all of the dimensions you will need concerning Dexter Torflex axles.

I bought a FlexiRide so that I could change the height after the axle was mounted. The arms have splined connections to the torsion bar and can be changed as you see fit.
Those arms are a little shorter than the Dexter and AL-KO so the position of the axle needs to be shifted a little to put the axle in the same place.
You can order the FlexiRide in the same dimensions as the Dexter as to the hub spacing etc.
As another benefit those axle arms and spindles can be replaced separately if necessary.

ive done the suspension mod with 6 degrees down, 15 inch wheels. I love it. The ride is so much smoother. Under load the arms of the torflex are horizontal.

Here's a thread regarding that mod.

Looks great, how much clearance would you say you have?

Thanks for the link, yes, I've been going back and forth with the 14" and a set of 15" on mags.

I think about 14 inches.

I haven't measured my clearance.

I changed mine a year, or two, ago.

I increased the weight capacity to #3500 and made the arms with a 22 degree down angle.
Mine have splines on the torsion bar so I could change it, but, I like a bit more clearance.
I also added a 3" lift to the frame and re-arranged the axle so that the arms are now in the 'trailing' mode.

Thanks for all the input, I am leaning towards the Flexiride so I will have some options after installation, will send some photos when the work gets started. That said, anyone have a good way of taking the body off the frame?

If I had it to do over again with the Flexiride I would make sure that I bought the accompanying brackets for bolt on. If I remember correctly there are mating brackets you can weld to the frame and then bolt the axle to them.
Not that you are likely to need to replace the axle.
Also measure YOUR frame to get the inside and outside dimensions since my frame was not the specified width.
That meant that the brackets on my axle did not hit perfectly making putting a plate over the connection was not in the cards.
The dealer will make the axle special at no extra charge as they make it for you.
In my case I felt that 3500 was too heavy of a spring rate and 2500 was too light. They happily made a 3000 on the frame of the 3500 by changing the rubber in the square section.
I assumed that the specifications from (in my case the AL-KO) would fit perfectly.
The axles on the new trailers are probably installed on the bare frame where welding at the junction of the bottom of the frame to the bracket is easily made, but with the shell mounted the accompanying mounting brackets make welding easier since the axle is not in the way.

Thanks for the link, I am actually on the Universal group website right now and yes I will get the custom made axle and bolt it to the welded on brackets.
My 13' Trillium is only 1500lbs so I think I will go w/ the 2000lb axle.
I appreciate the input and experience, cheers, Jorge.
