16' Scamp Deluxe with 2017 Honda Odyssey

I tow a 16' Scamp Deluxe (wood interior), which is pretty heavy, with a 2017 Honda Odyssey. I used to pull it with a 2006 Honda Pilot. When I started towing, I didn't understand how important it was to have the trailer level, so my scamp rode with the front end pointing down. With the Odyssey, I decided to make sure the Scamp was level. I ended up having to use a 6" rise ball mount plus a 2" rise on the ball itself (see pictures) for a total rise of 8". (I went this route because I couldn't find an 8" ball mount locally and I didn't have time to buy online before my trip.) Now that the Scamp is level, it is pulling better with the Odyssey than it ever did with the Pilot. My first trip with this setup was about 4,000 miles round trip from Minnesota to Utah.

I did not put a weight distribution hitch on the Odyssey because the Honda manual said that WD hitches should not be used. I didn't have much sway until I got over about 75 mph in Utah where the interstate speed limit is 80 mph. When the Scamp does start to sway a little bit, I manually apply the trailer brakes gently using my Prodigy P2 break controller, and that usually does the trick (along with slowing down a bit).

I am happy with this setup and don't regret skipping the WD hitch.

Good luck.

I hope I’m missing something here
But towing a trailer over 75 mph regardless of speed limit is nuts
Please let me know when you are in my area so I can get off the road

Yeah, I agree. :-) The speed limit was 80 and I wanted to get home, so I tried to go faster, but decided to drop back down to around 70.

Good to hear
I think we have all at some point been in a hurry to get somewhere... and I believe most have come to the same conclusion
Slow down and arrive safely
